Job Description
Missions
In the search for the development of electronic devices presenting ultra-low energy consumption, spintronic devices which rely on the generation of currents with an asymmetric population of spin up and spin down carriers appear quite appealing. Interestingly, spin-dependent charge transport, named Chirality Induced Spin-Selectivity (CISS), was recently observed through chiral molecules grafted on surfaces (doi: 10.1021/acs.chemrev.3c00661). The project aims at participating in the developments of single-molecule junctions by computational studies in quantum mechanics.
Activity
The work will concentrate on utilizing first-principles electronic structure methods to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying physics that govern the properties of materials and ultimately provide avenues for improvement. Various computational approaches, including Density-Functional Theory for molecules or periodic systems and wavefunction-based codes, will be adapted to the different physical information needed.
Your Profil
Skills
Admission requires a PhD in computational of theoretical material sciences/physics/chemistry. Experience in first principles quantum mechanical calculations and other atomistic simulation methods, ideally in applications to simulations of materials, will be very much appreciated. Good communication skills are required for this collaborative project, in particular written and spoken English.
Your Work Environment
This post-doctoral work will take place within the framework of a collaboration involving teams in Rennes and Bordeaux in France, and in Tempe in Arizona (USA). The candidate will be hosted at Institute of Chemical Sciences of Rennes on the Campus of Beaulieu at the University of Rennes (https://iscr.univ-rennes.fr/). All resources (hardware, software packages) needed to complete the work are available at the CTI team. The team gathers fifteen staff members, and twelve PhD students / post-docs working in quantum computational chemistry and material science (from molecules and hybrids to solid-state compounds). The Institute of Chemical Sciences of Rennes is a multidisciplinary laboratory that gathers more than 230 academic researchers and more than 500 members, making it one of the largest laboratories in France dedicated to chemistry.
