Missions
Within the Digital Science laboratory of Nantes, your mission will be to support the development and maintenance of the "aerial drone" platform on the site of the Ecole Centrale de Nantes. The mission will be carried out in collaboration with the current platform leader.
The position is integrated in particular in the research activities of two projects on drones of the LS2N :
- The ANR CONCERTO project on controlled mobility and efficient communications in a self-organizing fleet of drones
- The COMINLABS LEASARD project on low-energy deep neural networks for drones in search and rescue missions
The associated scientific objectives of the position are:
- localization and control of UAV fleet with consideration of obstacles, erroneous sensor data, loss of information exchange between UAVs;
- the integration on UAVs of sensors such as event-based cameras and software integrating neural networks on low power consumption hardware boards.
The work will be carried out on the LS2N's experimental UAV equipment in interaction with the laboratory's UAV platform engineer, researchers and teacher-researchers working on the projects. The engineer will be required to collaborate with other partners (engineers, post-docs) of the projects in Lyon and Brest and may be required to carry out experiments on the partner sites.
The engineer may also be required to provide technical support for other scientific projects related to the platform.
Activities
• participate in the simulation and experimentation environment dedicated to the UAV fleet by integrating the appropriate sensors for the project,
• implement control and localization algorithms for a fleet of drones,
• emulate sensors (GPS, cameras...) in flight and integrate error models,
• integrate sensors on the UAVs to carry out experimental tests in the air,
• participate in the maintenance of the UAVs and the dedicated motion capture system,
• write technical reports of the results and experiments,
• structure and document the developed software,
• participate in project meetings and exchange with project members.
Skills
- Hold a Master's degree and/or an engineering degree
- General knowledge of engineering sciences (mechanical, electronic, control, microcomputer...).
- Knowledge of drone experimental devices and their conditions of use.
- Knowledge of programming languages (Python, C++). Knowledge of the ROS or ROS2 environment would be appreciated.
- Skills in software and hardware integration (integration of external sensors).
- Good English language skill, oral and written.
Work Context
The position is attached to the Digital Sciences Laboratory of Nantes (LS2N) which depends on 4 partners: the CNRS, the University of Nantes, Centrale Nantes, and IMT Atlantique. This laboratory of more than 200 researchers and teacher-researchers is spread over 5 sites in Nantes, of which Centrale Nantes has the highest concentration.
The engineer will be part of the ARMEN team (Autonomy of Robots and Control of Interactions with the Environment) of the LS2N located on the Centrale Nantes site. The members of the team and of the laboratory working on drones have an "arena" dedicated to the implementation of scientific developments.
