Job Description

Missions

The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the CONDORCET project (CONsolidate DemOcRacy : Choosing a, electoral method transparently, https://www.gate.cnrs.fr/le-projet-condorcet/) from the program PEPR Mathématiques en interaction (France2030) and funded the ANR, the French Research National Agency. The CONDORCET project observes that it is difficult to compare the properties of different voting systems, as some aggregate preferences are defined as rankings of all candidates while others are defined as evaluations of each candidate. Through collaboration between mathematicians, computer scientists, political scientists and economists, the project aims first to provide a unified mathematical framework for comparing these different voting rules. Second, it aims to make these results meaningful for decision-makers by simulating election results based on preference models calibrated using real election data, and by designing laboratory experiments and surveys of representative samples of voters. Finally, the project values scientific dissemination and links with the public.
Under this contract, the postdoctoral researcher recruited by GATE Lyon Saint-Etienne will work on analysing voting systems using in priority experimental and survey-based approaches. The following topics may be addressed:
• Sensitivity of results to voting rules
• Political divisions, polarisation, representation of voters according to voting rules
• Complexity, understanding and voting experience according to voting rules
• Explicability of voting rules
• Democracy, agency and voting rules
• Satisfaction and preference for voting rules
• Voting rules, abstention and participation
• Voting rules, redistribution and social preferences
The post-doctoral researcher design and conduct in silico, laboratory and/or field and/or online experiments. He/she will analyse data using relevant statistical and econometric tools. Priority will be given to candidates with econometric skills and/or the ability to analyse experimental data.
He/she will work under the supervision of Antoinette Baujard, and in collaboration with other members of GATE Lyon Saint-Etienne and the CONDORCET programme.

Activity

The postdoctoral researcher will be required to write scientific articles. He/she will attend workshops and research seminars at GATE Lyon Saint-Etienne and contribute to their organisation. He/she will present papers at seminars and national and international conferences. He/she will participate in some of the scientific outreach activities as part of the CONDORCET project. He/she will participate to update the internet website gate.cnrs.fr/Condorcet.
