Missions

The candidate will join the neutrino group at IP2I and support its activities in DUNE and in protoDUNE dual-phase, which is expected to have a second operation period (phase-II) in 2022 with an improved detector configuration. The candidate will contribute to the preparation activities, R&D and tests foreseen for the phase-II of protoDUNE dual-phase, as well as to the activities related to the dual-phase Electronics Consortium, in preparation for the construction of DUNE, for which a TGIR project has been approved.

Activities

The candidate will contribute to the preparation activities and tests, to be carried on at IP2I and at CERN in 2021/2022, needed for the phase-II operation of protoDUNE dual-phase, being involved in the R&D, tests and the associated data analysis and on the detector commissioning at CERN. The candidate will contribute as well to the additional tests and development activities performed at IP2I on the charge readout and DAQ system needed for the finalization of the design and production activities for the construction of DUNE. The candidate will also contribute to the finalization of some aspects of the detector design for DUNE, based on the protoDUNE experimental results, and to the associated simulation and analysis activities, aimed at improving the knowledge of the impact of the detector design on specific points of the physics potential.

Skills

The candidate should ideally have a strong interest and motivation for neutrino physics and have good skills on both the detector instrumentation and data/physics analysis aspects. These skills will allow the candidate to be effective on both activities concerning the front-end electronics and DAQ systems developed at IP2I and the software/analysis activities in DUNE. Good competences/interests on the analog and digital electronics and DAQ systems would be also appreciable.

Work Context

The DUNE experiment, hosted at the Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) under construction in the USA, is going to address fundamental aspects of neutrino mixing and mass ordering and to search for CP violation in the neutrino sector. The neutrino group at IP2I has a long-standing research record and expertise in neutrino oscillations physics and in detector developments. Since 2006, the IP2I group has been carrying on an intensive R&D program on the readout of liquid argon TPC detectors, in preparation of the next generation of long baseline experiments. The group benefits of a complete liquid argon infrastructure in situ with a TPC of 300 liters fiducial volume, supported by the LABEX LIO. The group contributes to the DUNE experiment, since its early foundation stage in 2014, and it has important responsibilities in DUNE/protoDUNE dual-phase, in particular with the leadership of the dual-phase Electronics Consortium in DUNE and the design and implementation of the charge readout electronics and of the DAQ system in protoDUNE dual-phase. The IP2I group carries on, as well, strong computing, software development and analysis activities in DUNE/protoDUNE dual-phase.
