Job Description

Missions

Within the LPSC, the observational cosmology brings together leading expertise in millimeter-wave instrumentation, advanced data analysis, and high-precision polarization measurements.
A central effort of the group is the COSMOCal project (https://sites.google.com/view/cosmocal-website/home), developed in collaboration with experts from the Institut de Radioastronomie Millimétrique (IRAM) and the
Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT), as well as members of the Simons Observatory and engineers from CNES. The project aims to achieve absolute polarization calibration with very high precision for the Large Aperture Telescope (LAT) of the Simons Observatory, and more broadly for major European facilities such as the
IRAM 30 m telescope and the SRT.
Led in Grenoble, COSMOCal is expected to soon enter Phase A in collaboration with CNES. In parallel, the group is actively exploring new instrumental developments, including the design of a next-generation instrument building on the heritage of NIKA2.

Activity

Instrumentation-oriented profile:
- contribution to the definition of the COSMOCal instrumental concept during Phase A;
- high-precision polarization measurements;
- development of the experimental setup for end-to-end system testing.
Data analysis-oriented profile:
- development of simulations and methodologies to connect these requirements with the constraints of the COSMOCal calibration system;
- contribution to the evaluation of calibration strategies and their impact (E→B leakage, beam systematics);
- collaboration with instrumentation teams and preparation for the scientific exploitation of COSMOCal as a common calibration reference;
- analysis and definition of scientific requirements for the detection of primordial
B-modes, in connection with the Simons Observatory and, in the longer term, LiteBIRD, as well as for the study of cosmic birefringence;

Your Profil

Skills

This postdoctoral position is intentionally broad and flexible, aiming to attract
candidates with diverse backgrounds:
● researchers interested in instrumental development, calibration, and
experimental design;
● researchers focused on data analysis, including instrumental systematics,
statistical methods, and cosmological inference.

Your Work Environment

The Laboratoire de Physique Subatomique et de Cosmologie de Grenoble (LPSC)
[http://lpsc.in2p3.fr] is a joint research unit affiliated with CNRS-IN2P3, Université
Grenoble Alpes (UGA), and Grenoble INP, with an average staff of around 230
people. The successful candidate will work within the observational cosmology team,
under the supervision of Alessia Ritacco.
The work will be carried out within a dynamic international consortium involving
teams in France and Italy. There will be opportunities for interaction with the Simons
Observatory and LiteBIRD collaborations, as well as active contributions to the
development of precision CMB cosmology.
The start date is flexible and can be negotiated during the interview process.
