This project focus on the study of extra-galactic transient sources with the current and future generation of gamma-ray telescopes. Beyond their interest as astrophysics sources, flaring active galaxy nuclei or gamma-ray burst are very promising probes for fundamental physics (Lorentz Invariance Violation, extragalactic background light…). The observation and study of GRBs is now of prime importance in the domain. The recent detection of 3 GRBs by H.E.S.S. and MAGIC opened a new window in VHE gamma-ray astronomy. Same applies for Virgo/LIGO whose detectors is now sending regular GW alerts from various kind of binary systems.

The first CTA large telescope will be operational beginning of 2020 and will bring additional detection capabilities in the VHE gamma-ray domain. The project consists in participating in the commissioning and early science of the first LST, in the first CTA alert follow-up, while contributing actively in the data analysis already collected by H.E.S.S..

The project aims to strengthen the collaboration in between the Virgo and Astro-gamma groups. It will consist in optimizing the treatment of alerts received from Virgo/LIGO and participate to the joint data interpretation in case of successful follow-up.


1) The successful candidate will take part in the data analysis of the second phase of the H.E.S.S. experiment. The candidate will also be expert-on-duty for H.E.S.S. regarding the GRBs follow-up. The data analysis results and consequent interpretation will be discussed in a multi-wavelengths and multi-messengers approach through the combination of the Fermi-LAT data (Analysis expert are present at LAPP), public optical and X-ray data. X-ray data analysis expertise is appreciate.

2) The first observations and alert follow-up with the first LST will start mid of 2020. The candidate will take part of the commissioning of the telescope and assume a leading role in the analysis of the first data and the very first alert follow-up.

3) CTA will re-act to alert sent by different instruments: X-ray and Gamma-ray telescopes, Neutrino telescopes and also Gravitational waves (GW) alerts from Virgo/Ligo. In particular, the candidate will work with the Virgo group to optimise the alert follow-up strategy. In case of successful follow-up of a GW alert, the candidate will assume a leading role in the discussion in between the 2 Collaborations.


Due to the multiple and ambitious aspects of this project, the successful applicant should already count on a solid background in high-energy astroparticle physics. A background in GW data analysis will be a plus.

The successful applicant will be able to start working as soon as he/she arrived based on a solid background of the groups and in return contribute in the LAPP groups as well as in the H.E.S.S. Extragalactic "working group" and CTA “physic group”. The time scale of the project fits particularly well within the schedule of the two experiments involved. A large set of data have been already collected and not fully analyzed by the H.E.S.S. collaboration and allows to start immediately an analysis activity. In parallel, the effort done in the H.E.S.S. context will be transferred to the CTA case in order to prepare the analysis of the very first observations with the LST prototype starting beginning of 2020.

Work Context

LAPP is a combined CNRS and Université de Savoie Mont-Blanc unit. Close to 150 people are working at LAPP: researchers, professors, engineers and support staff, students and visiting scientists. The laboratory is very actively involved in several large international collaborations working on accelerators, neutrino detector and astroparticle experiments (Virgo, H.E.S.S. CTA and LSST). Involved in many R&D and construction programs for large research infrastructures, the laboratory's skills cover a large scope of domains involving innovative technologies in micro-electronics, complex mechanical structure design and optimization, grid computing and scientific software developments. The location of LAPP, 50 km from CERN, and the presence of the theory laboratory LAPTh in the same premises, make the LAPP campus a very attractive research place for scientists contributing to particle and astroparticle physics. LAPP hosts the MUST mid-range data storage and computing centre - widely open to distributed computing infrastructure supporting research and academic projects.
