The postdoctoral fellow will explore several theoretical aspects of first passage theories. The first passage time is the time that a random walker (such as a particle in a fluid) has to wait before reaching a target region or a threshold. First passage times have applications in various contexts, including reactivity, since reactants have to meet before they can react together. First passage properties are in general well characterized for particles diffusing in simple fluids. However, in complex environments, where the random walker interacts with other variables, first passage properties are much less characterized. The postdoctoral fellow will participate in the characterization of first passage statistics in complex media, on the basis of theoretical tools previously developed and published by the team.

More specifically, the 

postdoctoral fellow will develop a formalism to calculate first passage properties for particles diffusing in periodic heterogeneous media, to determine how the microscopic properties of the medium modify encounter times between particles.

Another problem will consist in studying the kinetics of rare events. For such events, exact results exist in the limit of weak noise. The postdoctoral fellow will determine in which condition this limit can be inverted with the limit of large degrees of freedom ("thermodynamic limit") with which the random walker, or the reaction coordinate, interacts in complex systems.

A PdD diploma in statistical physics, theoretical physics or related area is required. Skills in analytical calculations are expected. Skills in scientific computing and numerical simulations would also be welcome.

Work Context

The postdoctoral fellow will work with Thomas Guérin. The postdoctoral fellow will join the LOMA laboratory where research activities (both experimental and theoretical) cover a wide area of physics. Theoretical aspects of statistical physics are well represented in the laboratory. The LOMA is located at the vicinity of Bordeaux, in the southwest of France.

Constraints and risks

- The starting date is flexible, ideally in 2023 (but it can start immediately)

- The contract duration can be larger than 24 months, depending on the past experience of the postdoctoral fellow (up to 3 years if the contract starts right after the PhD).
