Missions
The project is devoted to hydrodynamic turbulence in fluids, within the framework of the project supported by ANR "TILT" (Time irreversibility in Lagrangian Turbulence). The project consortium consists of one team in Saclay and one in Nice, and is working on fundamental properties of turbulence.
The specific objective of the work will consist in extending several known results in the idealized case of homogeneous isotropic turbulence to flows of geophysical interest, in the presence of stratification and rotation. The study wiil also be potentially extended to the case of non-spherical particles, to study the dynamics of their orientation in such flows.
Activités
The successful candidate will work on simulations of the Navier-Stokes equations, in the presence of tracer particles transported by the flow. An important part of the work will consist in analyzing data from numerical simulations, in order to develop of theoretical understanding.
Compétences
A good understanding of fluid mechanics and of mechanics of continuum media, as well as of standard methods of applied mathematics is expected. A familiarity with scientific software would be a plus.
Contexte de travail
The work will be at the Laboratoire de Physique de l'Ecole Normale Superieure de Lyon (LPENSL), which consists not only of theorists, numericists working on fluid turbulence, but also experimentalists. This complementarity in lines of approach is in general very fruitful.
The LPENSL is a regular department of physics, with many different competences.
