Missions
This work is a collaboration between the Laboratoire de Chimie des Polymères Organiques' (LCPO, University of Bordeaux) and the Laboratoire de Génie Chimique (LGC, Université de Toulouse), via a founding by the 'Carnot 3BCAR' program. The global objective of the project is to valorize the bioactive compounds obtained from the Kambucha fermentation of grape pomace, by encapsulating them in the form of Pickering emulsions using the bacterial cellulose concomitantly produced during fermentation.
Activités
The bioactive compounds and bacterial cellulose will be provided by the LGC. As a first step, cellulose nanocrystals (BCNCs) will be produced by acid hydrolysis of bacterial cellulose and characterized by appropriate methods (FT-IR, DLS, AFM…). The BCNCs particles will then be used as emulsifiers to encapsulate the bioactive compounds in the form of Pickering emulsions, after having introduced these compounds in the water or oil phase depending on their solubility (simple or double emulsions are envisaged). These emulsions will be first characterized (microscopy and granulometry in particular) as a function of different parameters such as the concentration in nanoparticles, salt concentration, oil/water ratio, type of oil and possibly surface modification of the nanoparticles. The stability of the emulsions with time, as well as the encapsulation efficiency, will be examined in a second step, in particular using UV-Vis spectroscopy and/or LC-MS chromatography
Compétences
PhD in polymer and/or colloid chemistry.
Physico-chemical characterization of polymers and colloids (IR-FT, RMN, granulometry, microscopy, chromatography…).
Good English and writing skills.
Ability to interact with teams of varied scientific domains.
Contexte de travail
The work of the recruited person will be performed within the Team 2 of the Laboratoire de Chimie des Polymères Organiques (LCPO), in collaboration with the Laboratoire de Génie Chimique (LGC, Université de Toulouse, https://lgc.cnrs.fr). The research will be essentially achieved at the LCPO, but travels to the LGC are occasionally to be expected.
The LCPO is a mixed research unit attached to the CNRS, University of Bordeaux and Institut Polytechnique de Bordeaux (http://www.lcpo.fr). It is composed of 4 research teams with 150 people, including 50 permanent staffs. The Team 2, entitled « Biopolymers et Biosourced Polymers», is directed by Henri Cramail. It explores the valorization of bio-ressources and develops green chemistry methodologies for the synthesis of sustainable polymer materials, focusing on: i) the depolymerization of biomass and valorization of the formed products, ii) the elaboration of bio-sourced monomers and the study of their polymerization, and iii) the chemical modification of polysaccharides for the elaboration of functional materials.
