Job Description
Missions
As part of the European NaturaConnect project, we are looking for a highly motivated individual to complete a thesis on modeling plant distribution on a European scale.
Activity
We are particularly looking for someone interested in applying dispersion models to projections from species distribution models developed as part of a thesis. These models are available for a large part of European flora. Candidates must have solid experience in the application of distribution models, quantitative ecology, and dispersion models. Solid experience in the use of computing grids and calculators is also essential.
Your Profil
Skills
- A PhD in quantitative ecology.
- A strong publication record.
- Proficiency in R and Python.
- Extensive experience in large-scale biodiversity data analysis and the use of statistical models.
- Strong writing and communication skills.
- Flexibility and adaptability.
- Rigorous and self-motivated.
Your Work Environment
The main objective and ambition of the European NaturaConnect project is to help countries design and develop a master plan for a truly coherent Trans-European Network of Natural Areas (TEN-N) that protects at least 30% of the European Union's territory, with at least one-third under strict protection. NaturaConnect brings together universities and research institutes, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations, working in collaboration with key stakeholders to create targeted data, knowledge, and tools, and to build the capacity needed to help EU member states establish an ecologically representative, resilient, and well-connected network of protected areas across Europe. The https://leca.osug.fr (LECA) is part of the University of Grenoble Alpes and the CNRS in France. Grenoble is located close to some of the most beautiful mountains in the Alps and has excellent connections to Lyon and Geneva. LECA hosts a large and dynamic community of excellent scientists with whom it is possible to interact, several highly cited researchers, a wide variety of experimental and observational case studies (mainly in the Alps, such as ORCHAMP), and several already developed modeling tools (biomod2, FATE-HD, VirtualCom, EcoLottery). The working languages are English and French. The selected candidate will join the BIOM team, which aims to describe, understand, and predict the spatial and temporal distribution and dynamics of biodiversity and ecosystems (BIOdiversity Monitoring). The team's research objectives are to study how global changes influence biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and nature's contributions to society. The team provides an excellent intellectual environment and the infrastructure required for the research project, with several postdocs and doctoral students working on complementary topics.
