Job Description
Missions
The study of invertebrate biodiversity (arthropods, gastropods, and nematodes) in high-mountain rocky and glacial environments is of major importance for improving our understanding of the functioning and evolution of extreme ecosystems. These habitats, characterized by demanding environmental conditions, host often specialized communities whose diversity and distribution remain largely unknown. Their study therefore contributes to expanding taxonomic knowledge, notably through the discovery of cryptic species, new occurrences, and distinctive evolutionary lineages. It also makes it possible to identify the rules governing community assembly by distinguishing the relative roles of environmental constraints, biotic interactions, and biogeographical history. Finally, these organisms provide particularly relevant models for studying the effects of climate change. Warming, glacier retreat, and geomorphological and hydrological changes in snow-covered landscapes can rapidly transform their habitats. Monitoring these communities therefore helps improve our understanding of their dispersal, adaptation, and resilience in response to environmental change. The recruited researcher will be responsible for developing an innovative research project focusing on this poorly studied component of Alpine biodiversity.
Activity
The successful candidate will be expected to undertake the following tasks:
* Develop and implement invertebrate sampling protocols adapted to the conditions of high-mountain glacial, periglacial, and rocky environments
* Establish and coordinate a network of taxonomists specializing in different invertebrate groups, both within and beyond the project
* Coordinate the sorting, preparation, preservation, and sequencing of the various samples
* Deposit data in international reference databases
* Process and analyze community ecology data derived from biodiversity inventories and environmental metabarcoding
* Disseminate the results through scientific presentations and publications
* Contribute to project meetings, scientific discussions, and collective activities
* Participate, where appropriate, in collaborations with project partners
Your Profil
Skills
* Proficiency in R programming and data analysis for the study of multitrophic community ecology
* Experience in laboratory work, microscopy, and molecular biology
* Established connections with one or more specialized naturalist networks
* Skills for conceptual development skills in the field of community ecology
* Category B driving licence
* Excellent physical fitness and ability to work at high altitude and travel safely on glaciers
Your Work Environment
The position will be based at the Alpine Ecology Laboratory (LECA), jointly affiliated with the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), Université Grenoble Alpes, and Université Savoie Mont Blanc (https://leca.osug.fr/), within the MEEBio research team, led by Sébastien Lavergne. The laboratory comprises approximately 100 people, including 44 permanent staff members. The position will be split between the Saint-Martin-d'Hères and Le Bourget-du-Lac campuses.
