In the framework of the replacement of petro-sourced materials by bio-based materials, it is essential to offer a wide range of cellulosic particles with controlled morphology and surface. The CellExtrA project, supported by the PolyNat Carnot Institute, brings together the Soils, Solids, Structures, Risks laboratory (3SR), the Laboratory of Paper Process Engineering (LGP2) and the Technical Center of Paper (CTP) in Grenoble, and aims to develop new processes to develop and produce such particles. In this project, two processes will be investigated, twin-screw extrusion and kneading, both very promising for the mechanical but also chemical treatment of cellulose fibers, at high concentration.


The objective of the project is to develop new cellulosic materials using a high concentration process in order to remove a certain number of locks, linked to the high dilution of fibrous suspensions and to the processability of suspensions that are too viscous. In particular, this project aims at:
• Comparing two technologies (extrusion / kneading) and validating on a pilot scale the production of cellulosic particles with variable particle size (from cellulose fiber to cellulose microfibrils) and with variable surface chemistry by oxidation.
• Demonstrating the interest of a twin-screw extruder or a mixer for coating high concentration mineral fillers.
• Evaluating the potential of cellulosic foam production by extrusion.

For each axis, the characterization of the structure and properties of the materials produced will be used to establish the structure-property relationship necessary for the optimization of the processes.


The candidate, who holds a doctorate in materials, process engineering or mechanics, will have skills in shaping materials, a taste for experimental work and teamwork. Knowledge of cellulosic materials will be a plus.

Work Context

The post-doctoral researcher will be located in Grenoble at the Soils, Solids, Structures, Risks laboratory (3SR UMR5521) . He will be member of the COMHET team ( He will mainly interact with Sabine Rolland du Roscoat, Lucie Bailly and Laurent Orgéas. He will work very regurarly at the CTP where he will interact mainly with Valérie Meyer and Elsa Zeno.
