Missions

To study the multi-scale mechanical behavior of granular metamaterials with innovative physical properties (electromagnetic, thermomechanical, etc.), by combining standard approaches from the mechanics of discrete granular media with those from the physics of active materials. The targeted applications will concern geomechanics.

Activities

The aim will be to fabricate active granular assemblies, to characterize their multi-scale behavior, and to model them using the tools available at the 3SR laboratory (1γ2ε experimental testbench, digital image correlation tools, discrete element modeling). Three cases will be addressed in order of increasing complexity:
a) couplings between a "passive" granular medium and additional "active" fibers able to defom under the effect of temperature;
b) couplings between a granular medium and active particles orientable by a magnetic field;
c) reconfiguration of active structures by combining the two previous techniques.
In each case, attention will be paid to: (i) geometry, interfaces, and inter-particle connections; (ii) the experimental/theoretical and/or numerical dialogue between the different spatial scales of the discrete media developed.

Skills

PhD and solid skills in mechanics of materials and/or structures + between 2 and 7 years of experience after the PhD.

Work Context

The successful candidate will be hosted by the 3SR laboratory, a joint research unit of the University of Grenoble Alpes and the CNRS (www.3sr-grenoble.fr/) in engineering sciences, which conducts cutting-edge research in the field of solid mechanics, materials, and structures, for a wide range of applications. The candidate will be hosted within the GeoMechanics team of the 3SR laboratory.
The position is located in a sector covered by the Protection of Scientific and Technical Potential (PPST), and therefore, in accordance with regulations, requires that your arrival be authorized by the competent MESR authority.

Constraints and risks

The candidate morally commits to submitting his/her application for a research position at the CNRS at the end of the post-doc (end of 2026), in order to join the 3SR laboratory as a research fellow.
