Job Description
Missions
Social justice issues are central to the development of public policies to combat climate change and air pollution (for example, low-emission zones or support for energy-efficient renovations). Social justice requires taking into account i) inequalities in contributions to greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions, particularly in the transportation and housing sectors, which are essential for understanding the differentiated responsibility of households, and ii) inequalities in exposure to the impacts of climate change and air pollution, which result in differentiated health impacts.
The engineer hired will contribute to innovative research on social and environmental inequalities in the Grenoble metropolitan area. Their main responsibilities will be to
● Characterize inequalities in contributions to air pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions in the housing sector, using a database provided by the air quality observatory (ATMO-AuRA), which includes information on heating methods and energy types used.
● Cross-reference this analysis with the one already conducted on the transportation sector to propose an integrated and spatially detailed picture of inequalities in emissions contributions within the Grenoble metropolitan area. An econometric analysis will identify and compare the determinants of these contributions.
● Characterize inequalities in exposure to pollution and the impacts of climate change. The literature shows that in the Grenoble metropolitan area, the poorest households are the most exposed to PM2.5 pollution. We will supplement this literature by characterizing i) the population's exposure to the impacts of climate change, particularly heat waves, according to income level; ii) the role of green spaces in exacerbating inequalities in exposure (environmental gentrification) based on indicators of accessibility to green spaces (public and private).
These three elements (PM2.5 exposure, heat waves, and green spaces) will be combined to examine how social inequalities reinforce or mitigate inequalities in exposure to air pollution and the impacts of climate change in urban settings. Depending on the candidate's expertise, spatial econometric tools may be employed to examine the co-occurrence of social inequalities and exposure inequalities, incorporating territorial interdependencies.
Launched in October 2022 for a duration of 4 years, the project brings together an interdisciplinary consortium with complementary expertise in the fields of climate, atmospheric sciences, urban air quality, epidemiology, environmental economics, social sciences—particularly socio-spatial inequalities—and geography.
Activity
- Familiarize yourself with and analyze the various databases to be used in the course of the work
- Identify inequalities in contribution and exposure
- Develop the necessary econometric analyses
- Contribute to the drafting of a research article addressing these inequalities
Your Profil
Skills
Ph.D. in Economics
* statistical tools for database analysis,
* spatial clustering methods,
* proficiency in mapping tools,
* solid training in applied econometrics (related to environmental issues, residential location choices, mode of transportation choices, etc.), discrete choice models (MNL, LC, ICLV), structural equation models, spatial econometrics,
* Survey design,
* Software and tools: mapping software, R and Apollo (and/or Python and Biogeme), survey tools such as Sphinx,
* Proficiency in English required,

* Strong writing skills.
Your Work Environment
The successful candidate will be based at the GAEL laboratory (Grenoble Laboratory of Applied Economics), a joint research unit involving the CNRS, INRAE, the University of Grenoble Alpes, and Grenoble INP, with a staff of approximately 70. GAEL's research focuses primarily on issues related to sustainable innovation and consumption, particularly in the energy and agro-industrial sectors. Research is organized into three areas: Consumption, Energy/Environment, and Innovation. The candidate will join the Energy research area. Research conducted within GAEL's Energy/Environment department aims to understand and evaluate the impact of policies in the fields of energy and climate. The team conducts high-level research in applied and academic economics and enjoys significant visibility at the national, European, and international levels.
The successful candidate will work in collaboration with economists from GAEL and economists and geographers from CESAER (Dijon) under the supervision of Sandrine Mathy (DR CNRS GAEL) and will interact regularly with all project researchers during project progress meetings.
