The postdoctoral researcher will integrate in the Structure and multi-scale dynamics of complex molecules (DYNAMO) team of ILM laboratory - Institute Lumière Matière (Lyon, France). She/he will be involved in the ARN ASTRID maturation project ALTESSE 2 (Air Laser-based TErahertz SpectroScopy of Explosives 2).

The aim of the project is the identification and detection of energetic materials remotely by means of THz spectroscopy. THz waves offer a great selectivity on molecular transitions and many "fingerprints" of explosives belong to this spectral domain. The following institutions will be involved: CEA-DIF, the ILM, the Amplitude Systèmes (AS) SME Imagine Optic (IO), the Institute Saint Louis (ISL), and the Danish Technical University (DTU). The role of the ILM is to investigate the scientific aspects of the project, and optimize air-photonics based THz time domain spectroscopy under laboratory conditions. Theoretical support from the ILM group Modeling of condensed matter and interfaces (MMCI) is forseen.

Her/his mission will be to set up a broadband air-plasma based THz source and detection system employing the fs laser source of the DYNAMO team. She/he will participate in investigating the performance of this system to identify THz fingerprints of various organic molecules, and equally participating in the data analysis.


She/he will take part of the design, construction and testing of THz source and detection system. She/he will conduct collaborative work with the associated teams of the consortium, in particular with the team from DTU. He/she will also be engaged in the supervision of the undergraduate students involved in the project. He/she will be implied in the analyses of the data collected during the project and preparation of the articles, reports and publications.


Required background for postdoctoral positions: PhD in Physics with extensive hands-on experience in ultrafast optics. She/he should have knowledge in operating fs laser systems systems. Previous experience with analysis of molecular spectra and skills in developing of data processing software will be highly appreciated.

He/she should have strong aptitude in working in a team and within collaborative and multi-disciplinary projects, and present ability to work independently. He/she should speak and write fluently English.

Work Context

This post-doctoral work is founded by the ANR and will take place in a deeply collaborative background involving other research teams and companies in France and Denmark. The candidate will be affiliated to the ILM laboratory in Lyon, France. The ILM is a joint research unit between the University of Lyon (UCBL) and the National Center for scientific Research (CNRS). Permanent research staff includes 200 researcher and professors, and about 80 PhD students and post-docs are working full-time at ILM. ILM consists of 19 research groups organized along six thematical axes, tackling various topics from solid state physics and nanoscience over ultra-fast optics to light matter interaction.

Lyon is located about 500 km south of Paris. It can be reached by car, train or plane, and is very well connected to major European cities as well as oversea destinations.

Constraints and risks

Periods of travel within France and abroad can be expected, in particular several visits to DTU are planned.
