Job Description

Missions

The successful candidate will contribute to the development and implementation of long-read sequencing for the molecular diagnosis of inherited neurological disorders. They will also contribute to the management, analysis, and scientific exploitation of the laboratory's biological and molecular data.

Activity

-Develop and implement diagnostic workflows for long-read DNA sequencing as part of the University Hospital's Genomic Medicine Plan. This includes:
performing method validation studies on the laboratory's sequencing platform;
optimizing bioinformatics pipelines for the analysis of repeat expansion disorders;
developing a user-friendly interface for data processing and result interpretation.
Transfer these technologies into routine diagnostic practice and prepare method validation documentation for ISO 15189 accreditation.
Analyze long-read sequencing data to investigate phenotype modifiers in collaboration with the clinical teams of the Neuromuscular Diseases Reference Centre.
Manage and enhance laboratory data by:
developing a comprehensive computerized database of biological and molecular data; overseeing the declaration and management of the laboratory's biological sample collection.
Develop functional assays and investigate structural variants, including large genomic rearrangements and promoter variants, in collaboration with the CBPE Functional Genomics Platform (Dr A. Janin and Dr Y. Jourdy) to resolve previously unexplained clinical cases.
Contribute to the scientific dissemination of the laboratory's work through participation in national and international conferences, workshops, and collaborative projects with other French university hospitals.

Skills

Degree equivalent to a Hospital Research Engineer or Research Engineer (Master's degree or equivalent in molecular biology, genomics, or a related field).
Previous hands-on experience handling biological samples in a laboratory environment (pipetting, waste management, use of personal protective equipment).
Strong background in molecular biology, including demonstrated expertise in next-generation sequencing (NGS); experience with long-read sequencing technologies is highly desirable.
Experience in the functional characterization and interpretation of molecular variants.
Knowledge of molecular databases and bioinformatics tools for variant annotation and interpretation.
Proficiency with computer-based data analysis tools, including Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, statistical software, and Python.
Experience in data analysis, interpretation, and preparation of scientific reports or summaries.
Good command of scientific English, including literature review and communication with international collaborators.
Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and the accreditation requirements for medical laboratories under EN ISO 15189.
Ability to take ownership of a project, plan and organize experimental work, and critically analyze results.
Ability to work independently while demonstrating flexibility and adaptability.
Previous experience supervising students or junior staff would be an asset.

Your Work Environment

The position is based within the Neurogenetics Unit of the Hospices Civils de Lyon (HCL), located at the Centre de Biologie et Pathologie Est (CBPE), Groupement Hospitalier Est, Bron, France, under the supervision of Dr Isabelle Quadrio.
The successful candidate will join a team internationally recognized for its expertise in rare genetic diseases, working at the interface between academic research and clinical diagnostics. The position offers access to state-of-the-art genomics technologies and opportunities for national and international collaborations.
