Job Description
Missions
Energy production and storage are major challenges for ensuring the energy transition. High-energy-density, low-cost, long-life batteries must be developed to enable the mass adoption of decarbonized energy and electrified transport. Currently, lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are predominantly used in portable electronics and electric vehicles. However, this battery technology is not sufficient, as the energy density needs to be increased by at least a factor of two to meet market demands. Additionally, the presence of flammable liquid electrolytes poses significant safety risks. One solution is to replace these with solid electrolytes, paving the way for the safe use of a lithium metal negative electrode. Lithium metal is the ideal candidate due to its high specific capacity but may require protection to ensure compatibility with the electrolyte.
Activity
The postdoctoral project aims to study and optimize the interfaces of solid-state batteries using a combined approach of electrochemistry and mechanical measurement. This project is part of a European Horizon Europe research initiative involving 11 partners across 10 countries, which began in June 2025. The various partners will provide the LEPMI laboratory with study materials (lithium, solid electrolytes, active materials, etc.).

Skills
Expertise in electrochemical and physicochemical characterization is required. Skills in materials or interface mechanics will be appreciated.
Your Work Environment
The LEPMI (Laboratory of Electrochemistry and Physicochemistry of Materials and Interfaces) is a joint research unit (UMR 5279) comprising researchers from the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA), Grenoble Institute of Technology (Grenoble-INP), and Université Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB). LEPMI's main research activities focus on the development, physical, and electrochemical characterization of functional materials (polymers, salts, ionic liquids, catalysts, ceramics) for energy systems (batteries, fuel cells). The recruited individual will work between two research teams, one located at the Saint-Martin-d'Hères campus and the other at the Bourget-du-Lac campus. Travel between sites will be required depending on the research project's progress.
Constraints and risks
The work will primarily be conducted in argon-filled gloveboxes to handle battery materials.
