Missions

The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for analyzing the data collected by the DORN instrument (alpha/proton spectrometer) aboard the Chinese lunar mission Chang'E 6 in May-June 2024. In particular, the aim will be to understand the temporal variations in solar and cosmic background noise measured by the various detectors comprising the instrument, to relate them to solar activity that occurred during the mission, and to trace them back to incident particle fluxes using GEANT-4 simulations of the instrument. These analyses will improve the calibration of the instrument and better constrain the presence of particles originating from the Moon.

Activités

- Understanding the design and operation of the instrument
- Modeling the instrumental response under GEANT-4 (based on an existing model)
- Analysis of the collected spectra
- Evaluation of particle fluxes entering the instrument
- Comparison with solar wind propagation models and/or comparison with measurements from other space probes
- Refining the energy calibration of the spectra
- Possibly, if necessary, characterization of the detectors in the laboratory
- Publication of the results

Compétences

- Nuclear instrumentation
- Knowledge of the space environment
- Knowledge of particle-matter interactions
- Proficiency in GEANT-4
- Writing skills

Contexte de travail

This research will be carried out at the Institute for Research in Astrophysics and Planetology (IRAP) in Toulouse, within the "Planetology, Environment and Space Plasmas," where interactions between researchers studying planetary surfaces and specialists in the space environment will help the applicant progress. The postdoctoral researcher will work within the planetology team that developed the DORN instrument. Contacts with the Chinese team will be established.

Le poste se situe dans un secteur relevant de la protection du potentiel scientifique et technique (PPST), et nécessite donc, conformément à la réglementation, que votre arrivée soit autorisée par l'autorité compétente du MESR.

Contraintes et risques

There may be an opportunity to test DORN spare detectors in the presence of radioactive sources (if really necessary), but without exposure requiring worker classification. If this were to occur, radiation protection training would be provided.
