The applicant will carry laboratory astrophysics activities on large carbonaceous molecules of cosmic interest in the group of Dr. Christine Joblin at Toulouse University / CNRS. He or she will study the processes involved when ionized molecules isolated in ion traps are activated by the absorption of photons or by collisions with rare gas atoms. He or she will also use action spectroscopy in the ultraviolet and visible range as a diagnosis to identify these species. The objective is to progress on our understanding of these species both in astrophysical environments and in meteorites. To achieve this goal, the candidate will use the PIRENEA and AROMA laboratory astrophysics setups. PIRENEA combines a cryogenic ion cyclotron resonance cell with several photon sources (lamp and lasers), mimicking the interstellar conditions. AROMA is a linear quadrupolar ion trap coupled with laser desorption ionization, which is dedicated to the analysis of the molecular content of laboratory analogues of cosmic grains and meteorites.
The studied species will include ions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their fragments. They can be produced by laser desorption ionization both in PIRENEA and AROMA. The candidate will use PIRENEA for laser spectroscopy experiments and to get further insights into competitive processes during the relaxation of a photo-excited PAH in a cold isolated environment. With AROMA, the candidate will study the structures of key molecular species in meteorites using collision induced dissociation and / or photodissociation.
We are looking for a candidate with a PhD degree and training in experimental physics and physical chemistry. Experience in mass spectrometry, ion optics and laser spectroscopy is expected. The candidate must demonstrate his/her interest in working in a multidisciplinary research environment at the interface between molecular physics and astrophysics. The candidate must show a strong motivation and have good skills in writing scientific publications.
The Institute for Research in Astrophysics and Planetology (IRAP, UMR 5277) is a research laboratory of the University of Toulouse (Paul Sabatier University) and the CNRS. The experimental setups PIRENEA and AROMA are available on the Nanograins platform at IRAP, dedicated to laboratory astrophysics. The PIRENEA and AROMA team comprises two experienced scientists, a research Engineer and a support Engineer. The activities are carried out within the framework of several projects including the ERC Synergy Nanocosmos and the European network EUROPAH, with interactions with the VAMDC and EDIBLES consortia.
