The applicant will carry laboratory astrophysics activities on carbonaceous cosmic dust in the group of Dr. Christine Joblin at Toulouse University / CNRS. She/he will use the PIRENEA 2 (Piège à Ions pour la Recherche et l'Étude de Nouvelles Espèces Astrochimiques) setup that is developed in the framework of the ERC Synergy project NANOCOSMOS (FP7-ERC-Synergy Grant). PIRENEA 2 combines a cryogenic environment with several ion trap techniques, which allows us to study molecular processes in conditions that approach those found in interstellar molecular clouds. More specifically, the applicant will develop the methodology to study gas-nanograin interactions at low temperatures, taking benefit of a radiofrequency ion trap and an ion cyclotron resonance cell, both operating at cryogenic temperatures.


The studied nanograins will consist of clusters made of carbon, silicon/iron/titanium and hydrogen. Species of interest will be defined in connection with experiments carried out in Madrid with the Stardust machine. They will be produced using a laser vaporization source. The objective will be then to study their reactivity at low temperatures down to ~10 K with different hydrocarbons CH4, C2H2 et C2H4 and other molecules such as H2O and CO, that are expected to lead to key reactions in different astronomical environments.

Work Context

The PIRENEA 2 setup is developed in the context of an interdisciplinary collaboration between IRAP (UMR 5277) and LCAR (UMR 5589) at the University of Toulouse (Université Paul Sabatier) / CNRS. The Nanocosmos collaboration involves teams from ICMM and IFF at CSIC-Madrid.

Constraints and risks

The experimental work will be carried out at LCAR-IRSAMC where the PIRENEA 2 setup is located.
