Job Description
Missions
At ISTerre, we are conducting experiments to understand how small topographical features alter large-scale fluid flows. This postdoctoral research will involve designing 3D-printed topographies, measuring their effect on rotating flows, and comparing the observations with models. It draws on a bespoke experimental setup, measurement campaigns already carried out, and a second topography currently being fabricated.
Activity
- Scientific design of terrain models and 3D printing: Work with the team to define the terrain models to be tested, contribute to the validation of the second terrain model, and prepare the subsequent geometries based on the results.
- Experimental campaigns and diagnostics: Utilise and supplement existing measurements on flat and rough seabeds; conduct rotation and resynchronisation experiments; prepare and characterise salinity stratification profiles with technical support from the laboratory; acquire velocity fields using particle image velocimetry (PIV) and analyse uncertainties; study velocity profiles, time scales and flow structures.
- Modelling and scientific analysis: Adapt and validate ToCCo for the selected multichromatic topographies; verify the calculations and prepare predictions that are directly comparable to measurements; compare models and experiments in linear regimes; document the limits of validity; draft publications; and ensure that data, scripts and protocols are reusable.
Your Profil
Skills
- Programming in scientific and data analysis fields (Python, Matlab, Fortran or C/C++);
- Ability to compare results against a model and verify their reliability;
- A strong inclination towards experimentation, initiative and an interest in the practical aspects of measurements;
- A solid background in fluid mechanics and experience in experimental, theoretical or numerical research;
- The ability to formulate a physical question and interpret results critically;
- Experience of spectral or semi-analytical methods and code development; familiarity with ToCCo or comparable approaches;
- Experience in rotating or stratified flows, internal waves, boundary layers, turbulence or interactions between flows and topography;
- Practical experience of PIV, instrumentation or saline stratification; an interest in CAD, additive manufacturing and the characterisation of geometries;
- A meticulous approach, the ability to work independently and the capacity to collaborate with researchers and engineers;
- Fluency in French would be an advantage for technical discussions with manufacturers and service providers;
- Fluency in scientific English, both written and spoken
Applications from the fields of fluid mechanics, oceanography, meteorology and geophysics are encouraged.
Your Work Environment
THEIA has enabled ISTerre to build a facility dedicated to studying the effects of topography in geophysical fluids.
The laboratory already has a large rotating platform fitted with a tank approximately one metre in diameter, a supplementary mini-THEIA device, a PIV measurement system and equipment for preparing the fluids.
The postdoctoral position will be based in the Géodynamo team at ISTerre, under the scientific supervision of David Cébron. The team combines experiments, theory and simulations to study planetary fluids. ISTerre is a joint research unit of the CNRS, the University of Grenoble Alpes, the University of Savoie Mont Blanc, the IRD and the University of Gustave Eiffel, and a member of the Grenoble Observatory of Universe Sciences. The programme forms part of the scientific and instrumental follow-up to the ERC THEIA project.
Constraints and risks
Operations on turntables and the use of optical devices will be carried out in accordance with laboratory procedures and training specific to the equipment.
