Job Description
Missions
The Grenoble Institute of Earth Sciences (ISTerre/CNRS), France, is advertising a postdoctoral position as part of the ERC DeepMagmaWaves project, which aims to revolutionise the interpretation of seismic signals recorded at volcanoes. To this end, the teams will develop 'seismo-volcanic digital twins' based on the physical laws governing the evolution of magmatic systems (Physics-based Seismo Volcanic Digital Twins: PSVDT). These PSVDTs will incorporate magma generation and circulation mechanisms, the internal structure of volcanoes and the propagation of seismic waves. Numerical experiments based on the PSVDTs will be used to test and improve current volcanic monitoring methods, as well as to design new tools capable of estimating, with unprecedented accuracy, the volumes of magma stored at depth and the flows that feed them.
Activity
The candidate will develop the first component of the PSVDT: the physical model of volcanic environments. The main areas of work are as follows:
- Thermophysical modelling of magma emplacement. Implement and extend the model, which simulates heat and mass transfer from multiple dyke and sill intrusions and produces distributions of temperature and molten rock at the metre scale (2–5 m grid).
- Modelling of processes in magma accumulation zones. Incorporating the redistribution of the melt through fractional crystallisation and magmatic mixing, crystal–melt separation, and the generation and transport of volatile compounds, using two-fluid and crystalline mixture models.
- Conversion to seismic properties. Translating the modelled temperature, composition and melt fraction into seismic velocities and attenuation using the mechanical properties of partially molten rocks and magmatic mixtures determined in the laboratory.
Your Profil
Skills
- Proficiency in the mechanics of continuous media;
- Proficiency in numerical methods;
- Scientific programming (e.g. Julia, Python, C/C++, Fortran);
- High-performance computing (HPC) and GPU computing;
- Scientific English;
- Writing scientific articles;
- Oral communication;
- Experience in communicating, writing up and publishing scientific results;
Candidates must hold a PhD in geophysics, physics, applied mathematics or a closely related field.
Your Work Environment
The successful candidate will work at the Institute of Earth Sciences (ISTerre/CNRS), a joint research unit (UGA / CNRS / USMB / IRD / IFSTTAR) with a staff of nearly 300. This unit forms part of the Grenoble Observatory of Universe Sciences (OSUG) and the PAGE Research Cluster at the University of Grenoble Alpes (UGA). Further information is available at https://www.isterre.fr/.
Organised into 10 research teams, the unit's scientific objective is the physical and chemical study of the Earth, with a particular focus on the interplay between observations of natural phenomena, experimentation and the modelling of the associated complex processes.
The postdoctoral researcher will work across the 'Volcanic Geophysics and Geothermal Energy' and 'Waves and Structures' teams and in collaboration with participants in the MACIV project.
