Job Description

Missions

The Grenoble Institute of Earth Sciences (ISTerre/CNRS), France, is advertising a postdoctoral position as part of the MACIV project (https://maciv.osug.fr).
The aim of the MACIV project (Multi-scale seismic imaging of the sources of volcanism in the Massif Central) is to gain a better understanding of the tectonic context and volcanism of the Massif Central. To this end, a series of temporary seismological networks have been installed since 2023 and have recorded numerous earthquakes beneath and in the vicinity of the volcanic provinces.

Activity

This six-month postdoctoral contract aims to determine the focal mechanisms of earthquakes recorded by the MACIV networks. The proposed approach involves applying a machine-learning-based P-wave polarity detector, combined with an algorithm for inverting focal mechanisms from polarities. A catalogue of focal mechanisms will be used to gain a better understanding of the stress state beneath volcanic regions.

Your Profil

Skills

- Proficiency in seismology;
- Digital signal analysis;
- Knowledge of seismic source physics;
- Scientific programming (Python);
- Scientific English;
- Writing scientific articles;
- Oral communication;
- Experience in seismic data analysis and, in particular, focal mechanism inversion;
- Experience in communicating, writing up and publishing scientific results;

Applicants must hold a PhD in geophysics or a closely related field.

Your Work Environment

The successful candidate will work at the Institute of Earth Sciences, Grenoble (ISTerre/CNRS), a joint research unit (UGA / CNRS / USMB / IRD / IFSTTAR) with a staff of nearly 300. This unit forms part of the Grenoble Observatory of Universe Sciences (OSUG) and the PAGE Research Cluster at the University of Grenoble Alpes (UGA). Further information is available at https://www.isterre.fr/.
Organised into 10 research teams, the unit's scientific objective is the physical and chemical study of the Earth, with a particular focus on the interplay between observations of natural phenomena, experimentation and the modelling of the associated complex processes.

The postdoctoral researcher will work within the Waves and Structures team and in collaboration with participants in the MACIV project.
