Job Description

Missions

To study the role of fluids in the subduction zone by characterizing their composition and temporal evolution at the subduction interface and within the mantle wedge. To develop innovative seismological approaches to identify fluid signatures and better understand the mechanisms underlying seismicity.

Activity

Identify and analyze repetitive earthquakes to study the temporal evolution of P- and S-wave arrival times (tS–tP) and their relationship to variations in water content.
- Use seismic velocity models (Vp, Vs) and data from the literature to estimate the large-scale spatial distribution of water content.
- Analyze seismic moment tensors from gCMT catalogs to characterize the source mechanisms of earthquakes.
- Decompose the moment tensors into isotropic, double-couple (DC), and compensated linear vector dipole (CLVD) components to assess the influence of fluids on rupture mechanisms.
- Interpret the results in relation to the hydrological and geodynamic processes in subduction zones and contribute to their scientific dissemination (publications, presentations).

Your Profil

Skills

Expertise
- Proficiency in methods for analyzing seismological data and processing waveforms.
- Knowledge of earthquake source mechanisms, moment tensor analysis, and moment tensor decomposition.
- Skills in scientific programming and data processing (Python, MATLAB, or equivalent).
- Ability to interpret geophysical data and compare it with existing models and results reported in the literature.
- Ability to write scientific articles and communicate results in English.
Personal Qualities
- Analytical mindset and scientific rigor.
- Ability to work independently on research projects.
- Scientific curiosity and ability to develop new methodological approaches.
- Ability to work in a team and engage in interdisciplinary collaborations.
- Organizational skills, ability to synthesize information, and strong communication skills.

Your Work Environment

The candidate will work at the ISTerre research laboratory, a Joint Research Unit (UMR) comprising approximately 310 people and affiliated with the Observatory of Universe Sciences (OSU) at the University of Grenoble Alpes (UGA), which is responsible for numerous national observation services.
The candidate will work in close collaboration with Blandine Gardonio (ANR Principal Investigator) as well as a student whose thesis will begin in September 2026.
The candidate will be part of the “Seismic Cycle and Transient Deformations” team at the ISTerre laboratory.
