Missions

Institut des Sciences de la Terre/CNRS (ISTerre) is opening a software engineer position within the framework of the ERC project SEISMAZE. This project is aimed at studying weak seismic sources and one of its main goals is to systematically process several large archives of continuous seismological data to build and to analyze catalogs of earthquakes and tremors. Project participants are developing various methods for detecting and classifying weak seismic signals. For their efficient implementation for HPC, the different algorithms must be optimized and organized in well-structured libraries.

Activities

The proposed position is focused on developing libraries of optimized subroutines for the detection and classification of weak seismic signals. The successful candidate is expected to work in contact with different SEISMAZE participants and collaborators (PhD students, postdocs, faculties) located in Grenoble and Paris and in coordination with ISTerre IT personnel.

Skills

- English (Excellent)
- Linux-based scientific programming (python, C, Fortran, shell scripting)
- Knowledge of geophysical signal processing
- software engineering: code development, documentation, versioning (git/mercurial), knowledge of software forges (gitlab), implementation of unit tests, performance tests (benchmarks), ...
- Knowledge of parallel computing architectures in distributed and shared memory (in UNIX-LINUX environment)
- Knowledge of data formats like HDF5 (or NetCDF) libraries

Work Context

ISTerre (Insitut des Sciences de la Terre/Institute of Earth Sciences) is a joint research unit comprised of 300 people. It operates under the supervision of the CNRS, (University Grenoble Alps, University Savoie Mont Blanc, French National Research Institute for Development / French institute of science and technology for transport, development and networks), and is subsidiary of Observatory of Earth Sciences and Astronomy of Grenoble and of PAGE, a research center of Grenoble-Alpes University.

Organized in 10 research teams, the primary goal of our research unit is the physical and chemical study of the planet Earth through a combiniation of observations of natural objects, experimentation, and the modeling of complex processes.

The successful candidate is expected to work in contact with different SEISMAZE participants and collaborators (PhD students, postdocs, faculties) located in Grenoble and Paris and in coordination with ISTerre IT personnel.
