Job Description

Missions

The recruited researcher will have two main tasks:
1) Designing integrated nonlinear devices such as broadband (visible to infrared) microcombs (or supercontinuums) that are robust, miniaturized, low-power, and reconfigurable.
2) Characterizing these devices within the Nanolyon nonlinear optical characterization platform.

The INL's iLUM / Mid-Infrared and Nonlinear Optics team conducts research in the field of integrated nonlinear optics in the mid-infrared (Mid-IR wavelength range between 3 and 13 um) in close collaboration with its partners in the OFCOC (Optical Frequency Comb On a Chip) consortium of the PEPR e - consortium, including CEA-LETI, FOTON, C2N, IES, and international partners from LIA ALPhFA (RMIT, Swinburne, ANU, Sydney University), and supported by several European projects (ECLAUSion, AUFRANDE, MicroCOMBSys) and ANR (MIRSiCOMB, MIRthFUL, OFCOC, etc.).
This consortium is a pioneer in this field, with several seminal demonstrations at the frontier of fundamental/applied research. A strong theme is the development of miniaturized, bright, broadband nonlinear sources for sensor applications (industrial monitoring, pollutants, greenhouse gases, health, safety, etc.).

Activity

The postdoctoral researcher will work under the supervision of Christian Grillet and Prof. Christelle Monat within the iLUM team at the Lyon Institute of Nanotechnology (INL-UMR 5270) as part of the OFCOC (Optical Frequency Comb On a Chip) project of the PEPR e-.
He/she will contribute to the development of integrated nonlinear functions such as combs and near- and mid-infrared supercontinuum sources on Ge/SiGe and SiN platforms (in collaboration with CEA-LETI) and GaP platforms (in collaboration with FOTON and C2N). He/she may be involved in all stages of the project, from the design of devices using commercial electromagnetic modeling tools (MODE or FDTD from LUMERICAL, RSOFT, etc.) or developed in-house (nonlinear Schroedinger equations, LLE, etc.) to the manufacture of devices using clean room processes via the NANOLYON nanotechnology platform (nanolithography, etching) and their optical characterization. The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with our colleagues at CEA-LETI, FOTON, and C2N on nonlinear aspects, as well as with IES Montpellier on aspects of integrating (via microtransfer printing) ICL lasers on GaP or SiGe (in close collaboration with several members of the iLUM team and the NanoLyon platform).
He/she will be required to take on a scientific and technical supervisory role for several doctoral students (French and international).
He/she must commit to submitting a Marie Curie Global Fellowship-type project in conjunction with our international partners.

Your Profil

Skills

The successful candidate, who must hold a PhD, should have solid experience (both theoretical and experimental) in nonlinear optics, parametric processes (FWM, supercontinuum, combs, etc.), integrated optics, and short-pulse lasers. He/she must demonstrate strong programming/modeling skills (SSFM, LLE, Matlab, Python, etc.) and the ability to set up an optical bench at telecom and/or Mid-IR wavelengths. Experience in at least one of the following areas would also be highly appreciated:
- Microtransfer printing (i.e., III-V source on Si, etc.)
- Clean room manufacturing, material deposition, etc.
- Spectroscopy/metrology.
The candidate must have a strong aptitude for teamwork, demonstrate initiative, and be proactive. They must have or be able to develop the ability to supervise doctoral students and undergraduates and have very good written and oral communication skills (English at a minimum) for writing articles and project proposals (e.g., MSCA global fellowship).

Your Work Environment

Research on optical frequency combs has revolutionized the field of optics with the rise of high-resolution spectroscopy in the areas of health, the environment, security, and information technology. However, frequency combs are still limited to niche applications due to their difficult implementation. Recently, the first demonstrations of frequency combs on chips (microcombs) have paved the way for the widespread use of these frequency combs.
In the OFCOC (Optical Frequency Combs On a Chip) project of the PEPR electronics program, we propose to develop the first integrated, broadband (from visible to mid-infrared), robust, reliable, and miniaturized microcomb source on an entirely semiconductor platform. To achieve this, we will work on the co-integration of two areas of French excellence: antimony-based ICLs (interband cascade lasers) and the non-linear GaP platform. The growth of these two sectors will be supported by state of the art platforms (SiGe and SiNOI), for the generation of frequency combs in the MIR and NIR.
