Crystal growth and related characterizations of new herbertsmithite single crystals. Control of site exchange and of D- or 17O-enrichment. The crystallographic (phase, structures and orientation), microstructural and chemical characterizations. Growth process optimization.
Preparation of the growth charge by pH-controlled aqueous precipitation. Growth in solution at moderate temperatures in sealed quartz ampoules. Scaling-up growth conditions to produce large quantities of deuterated crystals. The growth scaling-up will be based on an investigation of the solution thermodynamics and equilibrium phase diagram in the relevant regions. Characterizations of the crystals will be carried out by XRD and Laue method, EPMA, EDS and ICP-AES techniques, possibly completed whenever necessary by EELS and XPS techniques.
Expected skills of a physical chemist or materials scientist with a taste for experimentation in inorganic synthesis and physicochemical characterizations.
In the framework of the ANR-funded LINK project (Quantum Spin Liquids in Kagomé Materials), the SIMaP laboratory is hiring a temporary engineer assistant for 12 months. He shall work in the EPM group of SIMaP. The one-year position, located in Saint Martin d'Hères (Isère, France), is to be filled starting from February 2019. The growth of herbertsmithite single crystals with rates, dimensions and perfection unmatched in similar minerals discovered in the Sierra Gorda mines of Chili, has to be managed.
