Job Description
Missions
The assignment is part of the European EURAD 2 project and consists of studying the alteration of materials simulating irradiated UOx fuel under conditions representative of deep geological fuel storage. To achieve this objective, alteration experiments on simulant compounds will be conducted under oxidative dissolution conditions, such as those imposed in the vicinity of irradiated fuels by alpha radiolysis of the surrounding water. The aim of these tests is to determine the quantity of elements released by the materials in solution and to observe the changes induced on the surface of the materials at the microscopic scale.
Activity
-The successful candidate will acquire the state of the art as well as the knowledge and previous results obtained within the host team. The successful candidate will be required to produce model materials simulating irradiated fuel using a wet synthesis protocol that allows the co-precipitation of uranium and stable isotopes of selected fission products. After converting the precursors into oxide and sintering, the resulting pellets will be characterized using various techniques to locate the introduced fission products, evaluate the overall composition of the material, and observe its microstructure. Alteration experiments will be conducted. Elemental releases will be evaluated within the alteration solution by monitoring concentration changes using ICP-AES or ICP-MS. Finally, changes in the microstructure of the model compounds will be monitored using SEM in environmental mode and digital microscopy. The evolution of the topography of the solid/solution interface will be evaluated by processing images recorded at different stages of alteration. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting the experiments, characterizations, and analyses, as well as data processing, report writing, and presentation of results.
Your Profil
Skills
-The candidate must have an engineering degree or a master's degree in analytical chemistry or materials chemistry. Knowledge of nuclear fuel cycle chemistry and materials would also be an advantage. The candidate must have good oral and written communication skills and be able to work in a multidisciplinary environment interacting with different teams.
Your Work Environment
The candidate will be attached to the Laboratoire des Interfaces de Matériaux en Evolution within the Institut de Chimie Séparative de Marcoule (ICSM, UMR 5257, CEA/CNRS/UM/ENSCM).
