Job Description
Missions
The role for this position involves conducting experimental research in physical chemistry aimed at degreasing metal surfaces for the aerospace industry using new emulsion formulations, as well as developing characterization techniques to be transferred to a recycling company. Working with teams from the L2IA (Laboratory of Ions at Active Interfaces) and the LHYS (Laboratory of Hybrid Systems for Separation), the candidate will contribute their expertise in conducting metal surface analyses and optimizing degreasing processes, using emulsions or even liquid foams as a green alternative to standard processes.
Activity
The candidate will be expected to develop and/or adapt, through a rigorous experimental approach, a set of techniques ranging from analytical chemistry or physical chemistry to the surface chemistry of materials and the physical chemistry of complex fluids such as emulsions or foams, in order to monitor and quantify the degreasing (surface dewetting and solubilization of organic species) of metal surfaces with varying shapes and roughnesses.
One of the objectives of the internship will be to implement i) simple methods for characterizing surface hydrophilicity (optical and electronic imaging, tensiometry) as a function of the different treatment stages using several formulations—including liquids and foaming agents—that are well-defined from the outset, including reference formulations and newly developed ones; and ii) to evaluate the time required for decontamination as a function of the topology of the metal chips.
Literature reviews, the compilation and monitoring of European standards for this type of formulation, and the dissemination and promotion of results through participation in conferences and the drafting of reports, scientific articles, and patents will, of course, be required; participation in the laboratory's collective tasks will also be expected.
Your Profil
Skills
- PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY of emulsions and/or foams
- CHEMISTRY, emulsion formulations
- Solubilization of organic compounds
- ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES: ICP-AES, spectroscopy (UV-Vis, IR,
NMR), XRD, ATG, microscopy (SEM, TEM, AFM)
Other Skills:
-- MATERIALS SCIENCE: characterization of metal surfaces
Proficiency in computer tools for data collection and processing.
-Proficiency in presentation techniques (oral and written) and facilitating meetings.
-Level 2 oral and written comprehension of English.
Your Work Environment
To meet the growing needs of our economies, the manufacturing industry must develop recycling systems, particularly for strategic metals. Consequently, and in order to increase the efficiency with which our societies use materials, the recycling and environmental industry is now focused on recovering value from industrial residues and waste of all kinds—often complex in nature—by seeking, either after cleaning or sometimes after dissolution, to recover some or all of the metals used, and is also interested in the remanufacturing of high-value-added semi-finished products (upcycling). When degreasing steps are required for waste generated by machining and manufacturing, new formulations—effective and, above all, compliant with increasingly stringent European environmental standards (which are necessary for a sustainable economy)—must be made available to manufacturers.
This research will be conducted at the Marcoule Institute of Separative Chemistry, affiliated with the CEA in Marcoule, as part of a research initiative focused on the circular economy. This joint research unit is well-equipped with analytical tools to meet the project's objectives through close collaboration between the two teams at L2IA (https://www.icsm.fr/l2ia.html) and LHYS (https://www.icsm.fr/lhys.html), in partnership with SOVAMEP (France 2030 project, MOTRIS / https://www.inc.cnrs.fr/fr/cnrsinfo/lancement-du-projet-motris)
