This project aims at performing laboratory experiments to characterize the formation of new particles from the oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In particular, the molecular characterization of both gas and particle phases during aerosol formation will be targeted. Hence it would be possible to probe/characterize chemical reactions involved in the growth of utltrafine particles (<100 nm). The parametrization of these processes will ultimately improve current models of the formation of atmospheric particles.
The recruited person will perform laboratory-based experiments, mainly by means of an atmospheric simulation chamber and aerosol flow reactors, coupled to various online high-resolution mass spectrometers (i.e., PTR-MS ; CI-Orbitrap; EESI-Orbitrap).
Applicants should have a strong background in experimental physical or analytical chemistry, with a good level in English. Applicants having experience in handling high-resolution mass spectrometers, (e.g., PTR-MS, CIMS,...) are encouraged to apply. Skills in coding (Matlab, Python), would be beneficial.
The researcher will work in the CARE team (Characterisation and Remediation of pollutants, http://www.ircelyon.univ-lyon1.fr/en/la_recherche/equipes_de_recherche/(syrcel_identifier)/CARE" of the Institute of Researches on Catalysis and Environment of LYON (IRCELYON). This academic laboratory located in Villeurbanne (France) is the largest one in Europe devoted to heterogeneous catalysis. The CARE group is focused on environmental topics.
