Missions

This work focuses on the modification of carbon-based supports for use as a platinum-based catalyst support. These electrodes will be studied as a cathode for application in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Initially, the supports will be modified by plasma, and the nanoscale catalyst will be deposited onto the support. In a second phase, a specific study will be conducted to quantify the strength of interaction between the carbon support, the catalyst, and the ionomer. Calorimetric measurements will be performed to study the impact of carbon functionalization by plasma. The catalytic activity of these electrodes will be studied through electrochemistry

Activities

• Preparation and characterization of carbon supports by plasma
• Characterization of the supports by calorimetry
• Physicochemical and electrochemical characterization of supported catalysts
• Preparation of membrane-electrode assembly with the prepared materials at the cathode, and characterization on an fuel cell test bench
• Writing bibliographic reports and activity reports

Skills

The candidate must be motivated and autonomous, possess knowledge in materials science/electrochemistry, and have solid experience in proton exchange membrane fuel cell characterization. Proficiency in French or English will be essential to communicate with group members and to write reports, articles, and protocols (good spoken and written level).

Work Context

-

The position is located in a sector under the protection of scientific and technical potential (PPST), and therefore requires, in accordance with the regulations, that your arrival is authorized by the competent authority of the MESR.

Constraints and risks

The Charles Gerhardt Institute UMR 5253, is one of the four Institutes of the Montpellier Chemistry Pole. The Aggregates, Interfaces and Materials for Energy team brings together around 70 research/lecturer staff, PhD students, post-doc and CDD who develop their research activities on the topics of materials and their action mechanisms for energy by implementing skills in the chemistry and physico-chemistry of materials and interfaces, the chemistry of solid and materials. The activity of the recruited person will be carried out within the "Energy Conversion" group, in relation to the group's activities on proton exchange membrane fuel cell. Project supported by the European Highlander project.
