Water electrolysis is potentially one of the most environmentally friendly hydrogen production processes. However, the large-scale deployment of proton exchange membrane electrolysers will be slowed down in the near future by limited iridium resources (IrO2 is the conventional catalyst used at the anode for the oxidation of water to oxygen). The objective of this project is to reduce the quantity of Ir necessary for the oxygen production reaction, by improving the specific activity of the anodes. Such a development will contribute to the development of low temperature water electrolysis at an acceptable cost without loss of performance, for the massive production of hydrogen. To achieve this objective, the mission of the post-doctoral researcher will be the synthesis of catalysts for the oxidation of water and their deposition on a support of high electronic conductivity and electrochemical stability, presenting an appropriate morphology: doped tin dioxide.
- preparation of catalyst supports of suitable composition and morphology (for example by electroplating);
- development of optimized processes for the deposition of iridium dioxide on these supports; - formulation of an appropriate ink;
- manufacture of optimized membrane-electrode assemblies (developed catalysts combined with perfluorosulfonic acid –PFSA- membranes ) and their testing in an electrolysis cell
The candidate must be highly motivated and autonomous, and have a solid knowledge of materials science / inorganic chemistry. Knowledge of electrochemistry and fuel cell/water electrolysis technology will be a fundamental asset. Knowledge of French or English will be essential.

The Department of Materials Chemistry, Nanostructures, Materials for Energy brings together around 70 researchers and lecturer, doctoral students, and post-docs, who develop their research activities on materials and their mechanisms of action for energy by implementing expertise in chemistry and physico-chemistry of materials and interfaces, solid state and materials chemistry. The activity of the recruited person will be carried out within the "Energy Conversion" group, in connection with the group's activities on fuel cell and electrolyzer core materials, and within the framework of the ANR PEPR project Mathylde.
