Missions

We are looking for a researcher to join the Transfers in Porous Media (TMP) team at Géosciences Montpellier (UMR 5243). TMP is actively engaged in the acquisition and analysis of petrophysical data on cores and in boreholes, notably within the framework of the European Petrophysics Consortium “EPC” (https://le.ac.uk/iodp/epc) and of ECORD (https://www.ecord.org/) within IODP (https://www.iodp.org/). Part of TMP's activities relate to the study of coastal aquifers and their offshore extensions as “OFG” (offshore freshened groundwaters). The candidate will be in charge of developing a strategy relevant for studying recharge mechanisms and the current dynamics of coastal aquifers and OFGs. This work will be carried out under the direction of Dr. Johanna LOFI within the framework of the COST-ACTION OFF-SOURCE (https://off-source.eu/), the ANR AQUIMER (start date April 2025) and the new IODP³ program.

Activities

This position is for a fixed term of 5 months.
The measurement strategy developed by the candidate must be multi-methods and multi-scales, and must combine the geochemical approach on pore fluids, petrophysics on samples and geophysics in boreholes. It will be tested on the coastal plains of the Roussillon and Hérault (Southern France) which contain coastal aquifers already studied by TMP. The proposed approach may be based on a set of existing data as well as new data to be acquired. The candidate will therefore have to participate to field works to help acquiring downhole geophysical data and pore fluid samples on the studied sites.
The proposed strategy should be applicable to the study of OFGs and in particular those located off the coast of New England (Eastern coast of the United States) which should be drilled in 2025 as part of the IODP3.

Skills

The candidate must have obtained a doctorate in Earth sciences. He/she must have in-depth knowledge of hydrogeology and geochemistry, and good knowledge of drilling geophysics and/or petrophysics. The candidate must enjoy working in a team. Good oral and written command of the English language is fundamental.

Work Context

TMP is part of the Géosciences Montpellier laboratory, a multidisciplinary research unit, relaying on a wide range of works and expertise to develop new knowledge on geodynamics, environment and geo-resources. Its activity is divided into 6 thematic axes: Deformation, Transfers and couplings, Primitive Earth, Hazards, Hydrosystems and Resources.
The candidate will be welcomed in the Géosciences Montpellier laboratory which is located on the Triolet campus of the University of Montpellier. All means will be made available to him/her so that he/she can carry out his/her work successfully. The candidate will interact with researchers from the GM laboratory and the TMP team mainly (J. Lofi, E Le Ber, P. Pezard, L. Brun, M. Geeraert) but will be encouraged to set up his/her own international collaborations, particularly on the geochemistry aspect.

Constraints and risks

The candidate will work in the laboratory, in the office and will participate to field works.
