Missions
As part of the electrification of aviation and the increase in power and voltage levels (from 115 V to 540/800 V), temperature management is now a main subject for engine manufacturers and aircraft builders,. Therefore, to ensure the longevity of electric motors, it is important to control their operating temperature and improve the dissipation of the heat generated during operation.
Activities
The study is divided into 3 tasks :
• task 1: the first task is devoted to a state of art of frequency-dependent model of winding in electrical machines
• task 2: the aim of the second task is to propose simplified models, derived from the detailed models typically used, that could be employed to predict degradation in a machine operating under real-world conditions (electrical, thermal, mechanical stresses, humidity, pressure, etc.).
• task 3: this task consists in an analysis of filtering solutions connected to the electric machine, based on commercial products or laboratory research, in order to assess their impact on the aging or degradation process. Partners involved in the project will provide the necessary experimental equipment (machine prototypes, machines, filters, etc.) for the validation process. A test bench will be developed to apply steep voltage fronts to the terminals of the windings.
Skills
The candidate should have knowledge in Electrical Engineering, particularly regarding the behavior of insulating materials
Fluency in English is mandatory
Work Context
The project is supported by the “region Occitanie” and Aerospace Valley. The lead of this project is a major manufacturer of insulating wires and the partners include a manufacturer of electrical equipment dedicated to aeronautic application and two research laboratories (IES and ICGM).
The Institute of Electronics and Systems (IES) is a Joint Research Unit between the CNRS and the University of Montpellier (IES, UMR n°5214 CNRS-UM). The unit is divided into ten research teams of varying size covering the thematic axes of photonics and waves, materials, energy, reliability of systems in constrained environments and sensors and instrumentation.
Constraints and risks
This position is located in a sector falling under the protection of scientific and technical potential (PPST) and therefore requires, in accordance with regulations, that your arrival be authorized by the competent authority of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research ( MESR).
