Missions
This mission fits within the ANR's Collaborative Research Project 'ObsoMobile,' involving three partners (LIRIS/CNRS, ACCRA/Université de Strasbourg, and Centre Inria de l'université de Lille). The project started in october 2025. This research project focuses on understanding and remedying software obsolescence.
Device fabrication accounts for a significant proportion (between 60 and 80%) of the overall impact of digital technology, particularly for smartphones. While desire for newness or material issues like broken screens or worn-out batteries may lead to new purchases, a portion of device renewal also stems from software problems such as slowness, feeling of heaviness, compatibility issues, or OS and applications that are no longer updated.
We aim to understand the factors influencing the desire to renew smartphones. By mapping these different factors, we seek to derive recommendations and more sustainable design direction.
Activities
Data that has already been collected will need to be analysed in order to produce design recommendations for regulators, professionals and the general public. The successful candidate will also be involved in writing two scientific articles.
Skills
We are looking for a designer with solid knowledge of the environmental impacts of digital technology, experience in design-based research, and presenting findings to diverse audiences.
Experience writing scientific articles in English is required.

The work will be carried out at the LIRIS Laboratory (https://liris.cnrs.fr/) on the LyonTech-La Doua Campus in Lyon. The engineer or designer (M/F) recruited will interact with the permanent staff and doctoral/post-doctoral students involved in the project.
