Missions

The postdoctoral fellow will be in charge of modelling the thermal and hydrological processes of high-mountain permafrost with the software Feflow® (DHI – WASY). This work is conducted in the frame of the research project ANR-19-CE01-0018-01 WISPER : « Water and Ice related processes in Steep alpine bedrock PERmafrost » (http://edytem.cnrs.fr/projet-anr-wisper-anr-project-wisper/), funded by the French National Research Agency. This project aims at improving the understanding the thermal and hydrological dynamics of rockwall permafrost to better approach the mechanical processes, especially bedrock failures in high mountain, based on numerical modelling and geoelectric monitoring.

Activities

- Testing the hydraulic and thermal sensitivity of rockwall permafrost to fracture characteristics(density, dip, connctivity, aperture) and infiltrating water proprties (quantity, temperature).
- Contribute to advising of interns who will be in charge of processing pictures series (4 years available) on the Aiguille du Midi site (Mont Blanc massif), in order to calculate snow water equivalent.
- Contribute to data collection, processing and analysis on th physico-chemical properties of water running out of fractures, as well as geoelectrical monitoring all acquired at the Aiguille du Midi site.

Skills

One or several of the following experiences/skills are necessary:
- numerical modelling,
- hydrogeology,
- geomorphology,
- geology or
- physics.
The following experience/skills will b notable assets:
- mastery of French,
- use of Feflow®,
- geophysics (geo-électric notably,
- mountaineering,
- sense of indepence and collective work
The mastery of English and driving licence are compulsory.

Work Context

The Postdoctoral fellow will work in th EDYTEM laboratory (CNRS and Savoie Mont-Blanc University) where pluridisciplinary researches are conducted, gathering social sciences and environmental sciences with mountain as a common topic. The work will be advised by Florence Magnin (Researcher, geomorphologist, PI of the WISPER project: http://edytem.cnrs.fr/pages-personnelles/florence-magnin/) and Jean-Yves Josnin (Lecturer, hydrogeologist). The laboratory is located on the Technolac campus of the Savoie Mont-Blanc University at the Bourget du Lac, about 10 km away from Chambéry (Savoie). The Postdoctoral fellow will be part of the Mountain Morphodynamic team which gathers researchers, lecturers, phD candidates, Postdoctoral fellows, and research support engineers and technicians, all working on the physical processes which shape mountain flanks. The Postdoctoral fellow will have opportunity to collaborate with norwegians (Oslo University) and germans (Technical University of Munich) partners of the project, notably around the advising of interns. The Postdoctoral fellow will contribute to field work in the Mont Blanc massif. The sucessful candidat will have the necessary computer tools for achieving the project and financial support for travelling (fieldwork) and dissemination (conferences, publications).

Constraints and risks

In order to contribute to the geoelectric field work planned in th project, the postdoctoral fellow will possibly participate to daily field excursion (driving licence highly recommanded). According to the fellow motivation, his/her skills in mountainering, and after having received a specific training, the fellow will be able to contribute to work on ropes planned in the project (geophysics) and achieved by the hosting team (reading out borehole data for example).
