Job Description

Missions

Two-month research engineer contract in remote sensing, applied to the study of decorated rock surfaces at prehistoric sites. The contract will be carried out as part of the ANR SCHEMA project (https://schema.hypotheses.org/a-propos). ANR SCHEMA is an interdisciplinary project aiming to develop a methodology for studying shelters with schematic rock art, combining approaches from archaeology, geomorphology, materials science, planetary science, cognitive science, social anthropology, and other disciplines. The research will be conducted under the supervision of Claudia Defrasne and Emilie Chalmin (EDYTEM), and Marion Massé and Anne Gaudin (LPG).

Activity

The aim of this contract is to process the hyperspectral data acquired at the painted shelters of Otello (Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Bouches-du-Rhône) and Les Eissartènes (Le Val, Var), including data cleaning, reprojection, generation of criterion maps, and Independent Component Analysis (ICA), and to format and disseminate the results through publications and conference presentations. Particular emphasis will be placed on understanding wall-surface alterations. The hyperspectral data will then be used to produce interdisciplinary wall-surface maps, enabling the reconstruction of the history of these sites and the role of the rock paintings within this history. Participation in all collective meetings is also expected, contributing to the development of the interdisciplinary approach at the heart of the project.

Your Profil

Skills

The research engineer should have a strong understanding of the principles of remote sensing and hyperspectral imaging, as well as the various stages involved in hyperspectral data processing. They should also be proficient in ENVI, Agisoft Metashape, and QGIS. The successful candidate should be well-organized and able to work independently. They should also have a good understanding of the issues and challenges involved in the study of rock art sites and demonstrate an openness to interdisciplinary approaches.

Your Work Environment

The research will be conducted between the EDYTEM laboratory, an interdisciplinary joint research unit of the CNRS and Université Savoie Mont Blanc (specializing in geomorphology, geology, geography, archaeology, and sedimentology), whose common research focus is mountain environments, and the LPG (Laboratoire de Planétologie et Géosciences) in Nantes. The research engineer will join the research team of the ANR SCHEMA project, which brings together researchers, research engineers, research support staff, and PhD students from different laboratories and disciplinary backgrounds (LPG, IPAG, LaMPEA, LAPCOS, MONARIS).

The position will directly contribute to the project by advancing our understanding of rock-wall materials and the processes responsible for their formation and alteration. The research engineer will therefore be expected to interact with researchers from all disciplines involved in the study of rock surfaces. The successful candidate will be required to travel between the two host laboratories and to participate in fieldwork as part of joint missions.

Constraints and risks

The work will involve field missions in rocky and steep environments. The research engineer should therefore be physically fit and have solid experience working in mountainous terrain.
