Job Description
Missions
- Conduct palaeoecological research to reconstruct vegetation and environmental dynamics in Madagascar over the last 3,000 years.
- Explore the interactions between human activities (settlement, agriculture, livestock farming) and Madagascar ecosystems using interdisciplinary approaches.
- Publish at least two scientific papers based on the results obtained.
Activity
Palaeoecological analysis:
1. Analyse sediment cores from various sites in Madagascar, with a primary focus on Lake Ilempo (Itasy).
2. Carry out pollen counts to reconstruct local vegetation dynamics.
3. Integrate high-resolution data (sedimentary charcoal, erosion via XRF analysis) to identify anthropogenic impacts.
Sedimentary DNA analysis:
1. Participate in environmental DNA analyses in the laboratory, with additional training if necessary.
2. Contribute to methodological development to optimise analytical protocols.
3. Identify the genetic signatures of agricultural plants (rice) and domestic animals (zebu) associated with Austronesian and Bantu populations.
Integrated approaches:
1. Study additional sedimentary sequences from other regions of Madagascar.
2. Link environmental events and human activities by combining different data sets.
3. Supervise postgraduate students (Master's level) on related projects.
Your Profil
Skills
Scientific:
- Expertise in tropical palynology, and potentially in the flora of Madagascar.
- Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, environmental DNA analysis techniques, with an aptitude for laboratory work and bioinformatics.
- Experience in sediment analysis (fossil charcoal, erosion) and palaeoenvironmental interpretation.
Personal:
- Motivation for fieldwork in tropical environments.
- Ability to work as part of a team in an interdisciplinary context.
- Organisational skills and ability to publish scientific articles.
Your Work Environment
- Main location: Institute of Evolutionary Sciences of Montpellier (ISEM), for palynological analyses and to supplement sedimentary DNA analyses.
- Secondary location: EDYTEM Laboratory (Bourget-du-Lac), for sedimentary DNA analyses.
- Duration: 12-month postdoctoral contract funded by the ANR via the CNRS.
- Training: Introduction to drilling techniques, the use of reference collections (ISEM Collection) and DNA analysis techniques. - Scientific supervision: Vincent Montade, Charline Giguet-Covex, Christelle Tougard, Laurent Bremond.
