Performing analyses, establishing and validating mass spectrometry analytical methods (QQQ ICP-MS) for measuring chemical concentrations (major and trace elements) and isotopic compositions (e.g. 7Li/6Li, 87Sr/86Sr) in solid and dissolved lake and river samples. Performing geochemical measurements, from sample collection to analysis


Analytical geochemistry (70%)
Develop and establish geochemical analysis methods (concentrations and isotopic measurements) with QQQ ICP-MS instrument
Research and define the best analytical method adapted to the scientific questions of the project
Create and perform sample processing methods
Develop and establish new experimental analytical protocols
Write analytical reports, technical notes, instructions, and analytical protocols for other QQQ ICP-MS users
Contribute to data analysis and interpretations
Instruct and train instrument users (students, researchers, engineers, and technicians)
Ensure technical monitoring in ICP-MS method development
Ensure maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of QQQ ICP-MS instrumentation
Ensure good routines for quality control, logging, and documentation of methods
Plan the analytical activities depending on the mutualization constraints of the instruments
Apply and supervise the application of health and safety rules and their evolution through time
Participate in the acquisition of new equipment and consumables, from need to final purchase
Manage requests of chemical products and consumable for the analytical lab

Field monitoring (30%)
Organize technical and human resources for field monitoring
Perform monitoring and maintenance of field instruments
Perform regular calibration of field instruments
Contribute to the interpretation of time series data
Update the database with new results regularly


Analytical and inorganic geochemistry
Mass spectrometry
Genuine interest in conducting field work
Experience with data processing, including good understanding in mathematics and analytical software
Good knowledge of quality control applied to geochemical data
Practical experience in the maintenance and repair of ICP-MS systems is an advantage
Experience in sample preparation for geochemical analysis
Knowledge of professional risks (chemical)
Knowledge of organization and functioning of academic research
Good spoken and written English language (B1 to B2)
Good communication skills and is a team worker
Aware and applying health and safety regulations
Driving licence: Category B
Ability to swim

Work Context

The Engineer will be based at the EDYTEM research unit (“Environments, Dynamics and Mountain Territories”; Le Bourget-du-lac). EDYTEM is a UMR, i.e., a joint CNRS ("Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique") and USMB ("Université Savoie Mont-Blanc") research unit. Research in EDYTEM brings together scientists from very different disciplines (sedimentologists, geochemists, ecologists, soil scientists, social scientists, etc.) around a common research object: the multidisciplinary study of past and present mountain environments. The EDYTEM technical platform, composed by 16 engineers, technicians, and administrators, is divided into areas of expertise. The Engineer will be part of the EDYTEM analytical platform PTAL ("Pôle Technique Analyses et instrumentations de Laboratoire") and PINTE (“Pôle instrumentation et terrain").
The position is fully-funded as part of two projects: ALPINE (Arnaud Huguet, ANR funding) et LAKE-SWITCH ("Using lake sediments to reconstruct soil weathering trajectories over the Holocene”; Mathieu Dellinger, ERC Starting Grant). These two projects aim at understanding and quantifying Critical Zone biogeochemical processes in the present and in the past by studying several lakes/rivers in the French European Alps.
