Missions

The Research Engineer will contribute to the scientific, technical, and organizational implementation of the activities carried out by the Bordeaux team within the ERC Synergy project QUANTA (Evolution of Cognitive Tools for Quantification). The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and management of scientific databases, the acquisition and processing of archaeological data, and the scientific and administrative support of the project at the local level.

Expected Skills and Qualifications
Knowledge
Experience in the design, management, and structuring of scientific databases.
Knowledge of data processing methods and data quality assurance procedures.
Experience in the digital documentation of archaeological and heritage objects.
Familiarity with image processing and vector graphics software.
Good knowledge of analytical methods used in archaeology and archaeometry.
General knowledge of the organization and management of European research projects would be an asset.
Technical Skills
Proficiency in standard office software.
Proficiency in database management software.
Experience with Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, or equivalent software.
Experience in the operation of scientific laboratory instruments.
Excellent scientific writing skills in both French and English.
Ability to prepare complex scientific and technical documents.

Your Work Environment

The Research Engineer will be based at UMR 5199 PACEA (CNRS – University of Bordeaux) and will contribute to the ERC Synergy project QUANTA (Evolution of Cognitive Tools for Quantification), which brings together research teams from France, Norway, Germany, and the United States to investigate the evolution of cognitive tools for quantification throughout human history.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Bordeaux research team while maintaining regular interactions with the project's international partners, as well as with the laboratory's scientific and administrative staff.
The position is embedded in a highly interdisciplinary research environment combining archaeology, cognitive science, cultural anthropology, linguistics, computational modelling, and data science.

Constraints and risks

Occasional handling of fragile archaeological collections.
Regular use of high-precision scientific instruments requiring compliance with established operating procedures.
Strict adherence to laboratory health and safety regulations.
Periods of increased workload associated with ERC reporting deadlines, fieldwork campaigns, scientific publications, and the organization of international meetings and workshops.
Occasional travel within France and abroad.

Compensation

Between €2,496 and €2,662 gross per month, depending on experience
