The objective of the ERC Synergy QUANTA project is to reconstruct the evolution of cognitive tools for accurate quantification, to understand if and how they co-evolved and to establish how their emergence and complexification responded to societal needs. It has been proposed that such tools already existed in the Upper Palaeolithic and took the form of sequentially marked bone objects. The researcher recruited will contribute with other members of the project to the identification and analysis of these objects, developing where necessary appropriate analytical methodologies and improving theoretical frameworks to differentiate them from other elements of material culture.


Main tasks
- creation of databases
- technological analysis of objects, mainly in osseous materials
- development of experimental protocols to improve analytical methods
- 3D data acquisition with surface scanning and confocal microscopy
- analysis of objects with scanning electron microscopy
- quantification and statistical analysis of microscopic features present on objects bearing serial markings
- writing of scientific articles in English
- participation in field works at museum and conservation institutions
- participation in interdisciplinary workshops in France and abroad

Secondary tasks
- Organisation and management of fieldwork in France and abroad
- Establish contact with collegues involved in the project and the project's case study
- Design and implementation of interdisciplinary collaborations with the other teams of the ERC Synergy QUANTA (linguists, cultural anthropologists, philosophers, etc.)


The successful candidate will hold a PhD in prehistory, archaeology or palaeoanthropology. He/she will ideally combine expertise in the European Palaeolithic and the African Middle and Later Stone Age with a general knowledge of other periods of prehistory. He/she will be skilled in the technological analysis of archaeological objects made of osseous material and will have a strong interest in cultural and cognitive evolution, interdisciplinary research and cross-cultural studies. He/she will be fluent in written and spoken English and be able to interact with other scientists in his/her field and in other disciplines in this language. A good knowledge of spoken French is welcome. He/she will demonstrate an ability and determination to work in a team. Skills in macrophotography, image processing and analysis (Photoshop, Illustrator, ImageJ), confocal microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, geometric morphometrics and multivariate statistical analysis will be welcome. In-house training or upgrading in these skills is possible. The candidate will have the ability to conduct independent and collaborative scientific research (literature search, analysis, database creation, syntheses and reports), leading to international publications.

Work Context

PACEA is a research unit attached to the CNRS (InEE), the University of Bordeaux and the Ministry of Culture. Our research focuses on the evolutionary, cultural and symbolic history of past populations in relation to environmental changes from the origin of the genus Homo to the present. The laboratory comprises a wide range of specialists including: archaeologists, bioarchaeologists, funerary anthropologists, palaeoanthropologists, palaeopathologists, prehistorians, archaeozoologists, palaeontologists, palaeogeneticists, geoarchaeologists and geologists.
The post-doctoral fellow will work in Bordeaux under the supervision of Francesco d'Errico (CNRS UMR 5199 PACEA, University of Bordeaux) and in collaboration with the other members of the team based in Bordeaux and in the other host institutions. This is a full-time position. The salary will depend on previous experience. Renewal of the contract is possible.

Constraints and risks

The candidate will be motivated to travel in Europe and Africa, be willing to undertake internships in the other host institutions involved in QUANTA, and engage in experimental archaeology.
