Missions

Establishing shared methodological frameworks, mapping local stakeholders, facilitating participatory initiatives at two pilot sites, and translating the models into understandable and useful results require an ongoing commitment throughout the duration of the project.
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing participatory methodologies for the co-design of risk scenarios.

Activity

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing participatory methodologies for the co-design of risk scenarios.
He or she will maintain constant contact with all scientific and non-scientific participants in the project, ensuring, in particular, that the needs, expectations, and results are communicated among the various stakeholders.
He or she will also contribute to the supervision of Master's internships, as well as to the promotion and dissemination of the project's results.

Your Profil

Skills

The successful candidate will have a background in risk geography—or a related social sciences and humanities discipline—and experience in developing participatory methodologies, and must demonstrate a strong interest in interdisciplinary practices.
Ph.D. in social sciences applied to the environment (geography, urban planning, sociology, etc.)
Significant experience in qualitative research (interviews, focus groups)
In-depth knowledge of risk and crisis governance in France (stakeholders, responsibilities, regulations, preventive information, etc.)
In-depth knowledge of coastal risks
Experience working in an interdisciplinary setting, particularly with modelers
Fluent in French (written and spoken)
Scientific English
Class B driver's license (recommended)

Your Work Environment

The position is based at the University of Montpellier (Triolet campus), within the IMAG Joint Research Unit (UMR), and more specifically within the LEMON team led by Antoine Rousseau. All equipment (computer, monitor, and small supplies for interviews) is provided. Regular visits between the partners are planned.

This job is part of the MARISCOS project, jointly led by IMAG (research unit in mathematics based in Montpellier) and LGP (research unit in geography in the Paris region) and funded by the Institute of Mathematics of Planet Earth (IMPT) and the PEPR Maths Vives. It is being carried out in partnership with the Jean Kuntzmann Laboratory (Grenoble; contact: Eric Blayo).
This project aims to improve the forecasting and prevention of floods and coastal flooding in urbanized coastal areas, in the context of climate change, coastal erosion, and significant regulatory constraints facing local governments. It is based on an interdisciplinary approach combining numerical modeling of free-surface hydraulics and the geography of risk management.
The objective is twofold: to enhance the robustness and reliability of digital flood models (calibration, quantification of uncertainties), and to develop co-creation approaches with end users in order to make the simulations more understandable, accessible, and operational. The project will be implemented at two contrasting pilot sites, Saint-Malo (35) and Le Grau-du-Roi (30), in close collaboration with local authorities, government agencies, engineering firms, and citizens.

Constraints and risks

Multi-day business trips to the job sites (Grau-du-Roi and Saint-Malo), possibly over weekends (with compensatory time off granted in accordance with company policy), and potentially including evening work sessions.
