Job Description

Missions

Develop and validate an alternative radiocarbon-dating method for lagoon-coastal environments based on ostracods, in order to improve the resolution of palaeoenvironmental age-depth models (MAPP).

Activity

Activity 1: Sedimentological and ostracodological analyses

Co-supervise coring campaigns.
Describe sediment cores and distinguish stratigraphic units.
Select and collect sediment samples.
Carry out wet and dry sieving of sediment samples intended for dating.
Identify, sort and prepare organic material for radiocarbon dating (Posidonia remains, seeds, charcoal, etc.).
Select and pick adult valves of Cyprideis torosa for radiocarbon dating.
Pick ostracods and identify taxa in order to define assemblages and biozones.

Activity 2: Chronological analyses and palaeoenvironmental age-depth models (MAPP)

Compare radiocarbon ages obtained from different materials to assess local reservoir effects (ΔR).
Investigate the spatial and temporal variability of reservoir effects in lagoon environments.
Study the ecological tolerances of ostracod assemblages to define biozones.
Build age-depth models incorporating uncertainties, sedimentary hiatuses and reservoir effects.
Combine chronological, stratigraphic and biological data to develop palaeoenvironmental age-depth models (MAPP).

Activity 3: Scientific dissemination and laboratory support

Prepare thematic literature reviews.
Produce graphical representations of results (stratigraphic logs, MAPP, etc.).
Write and disseminate scientific results through reports, blog posts and scientific papers.
Contribute to student supervision and the management of laboratory consumables.

Your Profil

Skills

Knowledge and expertise

Strong knowledge of lagoon-coastal palaeoenvironments and port geoarchaeology.
Sound taxonomic, ecological and biogeographical knowledge of Mediterranean lagoon-coastal ostracods, with particular expertise in the euryhaline ostracod Cyprideis torosa.
Knowledge of the principles and methods used to construct and interpret palaeoenvironmental age-depth models (MAPP).

Technical skills

Proficiency in opening and sampling mono-run sediment cores (Amaury corer).
Proficiency in protocols for analysing sediment and ostracod samples.
Ability to work independently with a scanning electron microscope (SEM).
Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Strater and XLStat (or equivalent software), as well as OxCal Online.
Ability to write reports, blog posts and scientific papers independently.
Valid category B driving licence.

Personal skills

Good communication and listening skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
Independence, initiative and ability to take responsibility.

Your Work Environment

The position will be based at the Radiocarbon Dating Centre (Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, 40 boulevard Niels Bohr, 69622 Villeurbanne Cedex, France), with periods of work at Archéorient's Ardèche field station (Commanderie des Templiers de Jalès, 07460 Berrias-et-Casteljau, France), where the sediment cores are stored.

Between €3,071 and €4,714 gross per month, depending on experience.
