Missions

The aim of this work is to develop an innovative kinetic model for lignocellulosic biomass into glycols reaction.
Glycols cover a wide range of applications, in particular for the polymer industry or as synthesis precursors. For example, the production of ethylene glycol (EG) is estimated at 10 Mt/year. To date, these compounds are produced from fossil resources (ethane/ethylene). The possibility to obtain polyols on a large scale from renewable biomass, in particular from LC such as wood, is therefore of particular importance in the context of the development of bioraffineries.

Activities

• An experimental study of catalytic conversion of lignocellulose, cellulose and glucose to PG and EG to understand the depolymerization mechanism of model molecules. Particular attention will be paid to the identification of the different components through a multi-technique approach, including the analysis of the reactants, products and reaction intermediates by HPLC, the monitoring of the depolymerization by SEC and the checking of the mass and carbon balances by TOC.
• A development of a robust kinetic model from experimental data allowing the understanding of the mechanisms involved in the transformation of LC biomass. The model will integrate reaction and diffusion for different stages of the reaction. It will allow to determine the reaction pathways involved in the production of polyols and to define the function of the catalyst in the different steps in order to make innovative proposals for the development of a process for the production of bio-based glycols.

Skills

PhD in chemical engineering or chemistry with skills in kinetic, heterogonous catalyst and/or modelling. Experience in biomass chemistry would be a bonus. He/she should be serious, methodical, autonomous, have experimental knowledge and an interest in modelling.

Work Context

This work is part of the ANR CatReMo project which gathers 3 academic laboratories (IRCELYON, UCCS and CP2M)
The experimental work will be carried out in the IRCELYON laboratories and the modeling work in the CP2M. The 2 laboratories are on the same campus in Villeurbanne.
