Missions

This position is related to the ANR (French National Research Agency) project MARGO « MAteRial of Glacial Origin and its fate in the ocean » that started in 2024. Iron (Fe) is a key factor limiting the biological uptake of CO 2 in the Southern Ocean (SO) with significant consequences on climate. The contribution of Fe input by matter of glacial origin (MGO) has received far less attention than other Fe sources. MARGO aims to address this gap by providing basic understanding of the major processes controlling the nature and magnitude of MGO fluxes and their fate in the SO. The region of Kerguelen, with its exceptional and multidisciplinary
knowledge base, is identified as an ideal site for the project. MARGO will be the first integrated investigation of the glacier-ocean continuum, characterizing the origin, fate and impact of MGO in
the SO. MARGO relies on an ambitious multidisciplinary (glaciology, physics, geochemistry and microbiology) approach with a unique combination of data acquired on land and at sea, ice melting
models and an ocean Lagrangian transport model to assess the dynamics of MGO delivery on different time scales and its impact in the SO.

Activities

The post-doc will focus his/her activity on the quantification and characterisation of MGO in the Kerguelen glacio-ocean continuum. An automated DGT sampler and sediment traps installed on moorings were deployed and recovered after one-year at two sites, equipped with CTD and current meters.. This experimental setup will allow to determine the transport and behavior of suspended particles, the seasonal variability of particle fluxes and of their biogeochemical composition. The post-doc will participate to the analysis and interpretation of hydrodynamic data, biogeochemical and trace metals data from sampler and traps and and contribute to publishing results in international peer-reviewed journals.

Skills

Candidates should have a significant experience in analysis of hydro-sedimentary and biogeochemical data especially concerning sediment fluxes from sediment traps. Expertise in oceanography and trace metals field are appreciated. Programming skills would be an advantage. The candidate will be integrated into a multidisciplinary international team, so proficiency in written and spoken English is required.

Work Context

CEFREM is a joint research unit of both the CNRS and Perpignan University located in the south of France, 200 km North of Barcelona, near the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenean mountains. The laboratory is a pluridisciplinary research unit with expertise in oceanography, marine chemistry, biology and geology. The candidate will be integrated to the research team composed of 20
reseachers and lecturers, 10 PhD student, 4 postdocs. He/she will also be integrated to collaborating group of the ANR project including french and international partners.
