Job Description

Missions

The successful candidate will use state-of-the-art NMR methods to study the interactions between viral proteins and host proteins, which are characterized by a high degree of intrinsic disorder, with a focus on major human RNA viruses (measles, influenza, SARS-CoV-2).

Activity

1. Conduct research, from setting up experiments to writing up results :
- Perform multidimensional heteronuclear NMR spectroscopy experiments
- Prepare protein samples for NMR spectroscopy
- Prepare RNA samples for NMR spectroscopy
- Analyze experimental NMR data
- Format results for monthly reports and oral presentations in English
- Monitor the literature related to the project
- Proactively suggest improvements for the development and refinement of experiments
- Write protocols and research articles in English for the publication of completed work

2. Participate in laboratory activities :
- Participate in the day-to-day operations of the research group (helping with logistics, tracking reagent inventory, tidying up, etc.)
- Assist with the supervision of interns
- Participate in the Institute's scientific events

Your Profil

Skills

1) Core Qualifications
- Ph.D. in structural biology or cell biology with strong knowledge of microbiology
- Expert in experimental multidimensional heteronuclear NMR spectroscopy
- Expert in the preparation of protein samples for NMR spectroscopy
- Expert in RNA sample preparation for NMR spectroscopy
- English (written/spoken) at A1 level

2) Technical Skills
- Strong technical proficiency
- Hands-on experience with NMR spectroscopy techniques
- Proficiency in statistical analysis
- Knowledge of and compliance with current health and safety regulations in laboratories, particularly in NMR

3) Interpersonal and soft skills
- Strong ability to work independently
- Proactive approach to research and scientific curiosity
- Open-mindedness and active listening
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to integrate into and adapt to the team
- Organizational skills and attention to detail
- Strong communication skills (written and oral) and the ability to report on your work

Your Work Environment

Located within the Grenoble Science Park (ESRF/ILL/EMBL/IBS), the Institute of Structural Biology (IBS) is a leading national and international player in the field of integrated structural biology. Serving as a research center, technical facility, and hub for scientific hosting and training, the IBS is dedicated to advancing research in structural biology, a field critical to understanding fundamental biological mechanisms. It relies on 10 state-of-the-art platforms.
As a joint research unit (CEA-CNRS-UGA), the IBS comprises 20 research groups, each of which takes a multidisciplinary approach at the intersection of biology, physics, and chemistry, aligned with three research priorities. Nearly 320 people work there—researchers, doctoral students, engineers, and technicians—in a multicultural and international environment.
The successful candidate will join Martin Blackledge's group, Protein Dynamics and Flexibility by NMR.
