Missions

The "particle physics" team of the Laboratoire des 2 Infinis - Toulouse (L2IT) proposes a post-doctoral contract to reinforce its activities on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The successful candidate will work at L2IT. His or her work will focus on the study of Higgs boson pair production and the reconstruction algorithms of the future inner tracker (ITk) of the ATLAS experiment.

Activities

The successful candidate will develop innovative analysis methods to isolate rare signals such as Higgs boson pair production from ATLAS data in a statistically optimal manner. He or she will then apply them to make a measurement of a key parameter of the Higgs sector, preferably a measurement of the Higgs boson self-coupling constant. In parallel, he or she will contribute to the development of algorithms for the reconstruction of the data from the ATLAS inner tracker (ITk).

Skills

We are looking for an experienced researcher who has already contributed to research in the field, who is experienced in supervising PhD students and who is a good communicator. Experience with the experimental study of the Higgs boson, with the study of di-boson final states, with the modelling of backgrounds with photons and jets, or with track reconstruction algorithms would be appreciated.

Work Context

The Laboratoire des 2 Infinis - Toulouse (L2IT) is a new laboratory created in 2020 to conduct research in fundamental physics using new numerical and theoretical approaches to data analysis. The laboratory's research is focused on particle physics, gravitational waves and the equation of state of nuclear matter, and it is supported by the joint development of analysis and data science methodologies. L2IT is jointly operated by CNRS/IN2P3 and the University Toulouse III - Paul Sabatier.

The L2IT particle physics team contributes to the study of the Higgs boson at the LHC and to the data reconstruction software of the new trajectograph (ITk) that the ATLAS collaboration will install for the high luminosity phase of the LHC. The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with other members of the particle physics team and with members of the computation, algorithms and data team at L2IT.

Constraints and risks

Short trips in France and abroad are to be expected.
