Current carbon fibers are mainly used in the aerospace, sports and defense sectors. They are produced from petroleum precursors. Their high cost and environmental impact limit these fibers to high performance applications. New mass markets, such as the car and electric vehicles, would become accessible if carbon fibers could be produced at low cost from bio-sourced precursors.
To reach such goal, we have recently developed a new process for the enzymatic solubilization of lignin in aqueous conditions. Once solubilized, the lignin will be used for the production of carbon fibers, composite materials but also for biobased synthons for the manufacture of compounds with high added values (natural flavors / dyes, etc.)
The candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Nicolas Mano and Sébastien Gounel at the Paul Pascal Research Institute. The main objective of the project is to develop/optimize the conditions for the production of the enzymes used to solubilize lignin in yeasts and in bacteria, to maximize their produced quantities and activities. The recruited post doc will optimize the enzymatic dissolution of the lignin and understand the mechanisms of enzymatic solubilization. The post doc will also work in close collaboration with the other partners of the consortium and more generally on the entire production chain of biosourced materials.
The candidate must hold a Ph.D in Molecular Biology/Bacteriology, Applied Biochemistry or related fields and experience in enzymatic production in bioreactor, enzymatic assays, …. Knowledge in DOE and of bacterial regulatory systems (more particularly in E.coli ) will be appreciated. These points must be specifically explained in the cover letter. Knowledge in the creation of enzymatic librairies will also be welcome but is not mandatory.
Since this work has a strong industrial potential, He/she will have a pronounced taste for valorization, technology transfer and to work in a multidisciplinary field. The candidate must be rigorous, have excellent organizational and teamwork skills, have the ability to lead, and be able to express himself / herself in English, written and spoken. The initial contract is for 12 months, that may be extended.
