Missions

Support the CryoDyn team in preparing, conducting, and validating ISMIP7 experiments, taking charge of implementing the protocol for Greenland. Contribute to analyzing, documenting, and disseminating the results obtained with the Elmer/Ice model.

Activities

Activity 1: Implementation and execution of ISMIP7 experiments – Greenland
• Set up the Elmer/Ice modeling environment in accordance with ISMIP7 specifications.
• Prepare the initial conditions, climate forcings, and recommended parameter sets.
• Launch, monitor, and document all simulations dedicated to Greenland.
Activity 2: Contribution to the Antarctic component and overall consistency of simulations
• Participate in the preparation and quality control of Antarctic experiments carried out by the team.
• Harmonize configurations, parameter sets, and post-processing protocols between domains.
Activity 3: Analysis, post-processing, and scientific exploitation
• Extract and structure simulation outputs according to the formats expected by ISMIP7.
• Produce key indicators (mass loss, flow, glacial dynamics, contribution to sea level).
• Contribute to the drafting of internal reports, technical notes, and shared datasets.
Activity 4: Interaction with the ISMIP7 community
• Participate in international coordination meetings (online).
• Integrate protocol changes and update experiments accordingly.
• Ensure the rigorous transmission of results to the consortium.

Skills

Knowledge / skills
• Proven experience in numerical modeling of geophysical systems, with modeling of polar ice caps being an asset, ideally using the Elmer/Ice model; good understanding of glacial dynamics (flow, instabilities, mass balances).
• Knowledge of scientific computing, particularly on HPC architectures.
• Solid foundation in climate science and model intercomparison operations.
• Proficiency in scientific English (level B2-C1), both spoken and written, to interact with the international community and write technical documentation related to simulations.

Skills
• Proficiency in a scripting language (Python, Bash) for automation and data processing.
• Implementation of simulation chains on computing clusters.
• Rigorous management of complex configurations, run monitoring, debugging, and validation of results.
• Production of visualizations, diagnostics, and metrics from large model outputs.

Interpersonal skills
• Rigorous, organized, and skilled at reporting.
• Ability to work independently on technical tasks while integrating into a scientific team.
• Interpersonal skills for interacting with an international and multidisciplinary community.

Work Context

The CryoDyn team at IGE is contributing to the international ISMIP7 initiative, which aims to produce updated projections of polar ice cap evolution for the upcoming IPCC report (AR7). The work is based on the use of the Elmer/Ice ice cap model and the completion of a set of standardized experiments focusing on Greenland and Antarctica. The position aims to strengthen the scientific and technical support needed to carry out these simulations and analyses.
