Missions
The researcher will be involved in the PICOPATT project (Urban Picoclimatic Patterns ANR-23-CE22-0005), which aims to assess urban climate variations on a very small scale. He or she will contribute to the analysis of a vast corpus of data from mobile climate measurements carried out over a year in Montpellier and Nantes. He or she will draw on the data display and analysis tools developed as part of the project and on in situ observations and surveys. He or she will thus contribute to the definition and validation of a typology of urban picoclimates.
Activities
Main activities:
- Analysis of the data from the measurement campaign and identification of picoclimatic situations using the tools developed as part of the project.
- Cross-referencing climatic data with the morphological, spatial and material properties of the urban environments studied.
- Observations and in situ surveys in Montpellier and Nantes to characterize the study sites.
- Synthesis of the results in the form of a typology of urban picoclimates.
Related activities:
- Participation in PICOPATT project team meetings and seminars.
- Writing scientific articles.
- Presentation of results at conferences.
- Participation in exchanges with partner local authorities and professionals.
Skills
Background:
- PhD in architecture, urban planning or engineering sciences.
- Expertise in analyzing urban environments.
- Knowledge of the specific characteristics of urban climates and associated physical phenomena.
- Good command of French.
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of data visualization and analysis techniques.
- Knowledge and practical experience of urban survey techniques.
- Mastery of graphic representation tools for architecture and urban planning.
Know-how:
- Aptitude for multidisciplinary research and teamwork.
- Thoroughness and organization.
- Self-motivated.
Work Context
The PICOPATT project (https://anr.fr/Projet-ANR-23-CE22-0005) is a partnership between two research teams from laboratories associated with the CNRS:
- The CRENAU team from the AAU laboratory at the Graduate School of Architecture of Nantes.
- The ADVANSE team from the LIRMM laboratory at the University of Montpellier
The CRENAU team is implementing the measurement campaign using original mobile climate metrology tools and methods based on a new measurement station adapted to the urban environment. The climate station used for the research measures the characteristic parameters of the urban climate experiment (air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, short- and long-wave radiation in six directions) with high spatial resolution.
The ADVANSE team is developing data mining and visualization techniques adapted to identifying patterns characteristic of picoclimatic situations in masses of metrological data collected. Techniques such as spatiotemporal clustering are capable of extracting groups of homogeneous objects, while visualization methods enable these groups to be explored interactively.
The researcher will work in the Nantes team in close contact with the Montpellier team. He or she will need to be comfortable working in a multidisciplinary context and be able to interact with computer scientists.
Constraints and risks
Regular travel to Montpellier.
